Cat padding behaviour

I'm wondering if anyone has any insight into my cats behaviour. She's a beautiful cat. We got her 3 years ago for my DS when his sister started school and he was a bit lonely at home without her.

We all love her but she is definitely his cat and he's her boy. She's always in the same room as him and follows him up to bed each night, where she sleeps on the end of his bed. If he's upset she will sit with him and generally look quite concerned.

She might give the rest of the family the odd swipe if we've annoyed her but she never does this to him.

She loves to pad and does this at least once or twice a day often with loud purring, dribbling and sometimes burrowing under the duvet. Now the strange bit is that she never pads my DS (it's usually his sister). He's noticed this and thinks it means she doesn't love him.

I've not really been able to explain why she doesn't pad him so I'm asking here!!!

Just to add, she's not really a cuddly cat the rest of the time. It's only when she's padding that you get to have a bit of stroke so although they're always together he doesn't really get to make a fuss of her.

Some cats Just don't do it.

One of our cats does this but only if you are wearing a fleece top or jacket. So for him it's not person specific it's clothing specific.

Yes, is it do with the clothes she's wearing or does she tend to snuggle under a blanket the cat likes?

Amrapaali · 25/11/2022 11:29

Agree it is clothing specific. My daughter has a very snuggly warm throw on her bed and our cat always go into raptures over it 🙄You can't find her on a bed or a sofa or on someone else'lap any other time. The padding is ONLY directed at that blanket.

She used to make biscuits on my head when she was a kitten but that has stopped completely now. I do miss it!

Ah, you might be right. My daughter does have a onesie that the cat loves. Although I still feel she does it to my daughter even when she's not wearing the onesie ... maybe I'll put him in the onesie and see what happens!!

One of mine makes biscuits on anything she stands on. My face included. The other only does it on fleece fabric.

I’d be minded to tell your son that not doing it is a potential sign she is very secure with him since that sort of behaviour can be a throwback to being needy with their mother and feeling a bit vulnerable. That also fits with her not swiping at him. But also our cat only does it on fleece blankets, and only next to someone not on them.

As a kitten mine would pad and suck my fluffy panda top I wore when I was sitting up in bed on a Sunday, he stopped doing that a good while ago. It was so cute.

However he did it yesterday (newer panda top but exactly the same) but his claws are now quite a bit bigger, ouch!
