To get a third cat

Please help me make up my mind.

We have 2 firmly bonded female cats although the younger one does annoy the older one when she gets over excited with playing.

I'm so so tempted to introduce a new kitten.

Has anyone else introduced a new baby to two established cats and can advise?

Hi
I had a thread about this recently- don't know how to link it but it's called 'would 10 year old female cats accept a kitten'.

POTC · 21/11/2022 21:04

We got a new kitten when eldest cat was around 6 and had 6mth old kitten of her own. We needed a male as have found they are better as assistance pets for autistic ds. Eldest cat isn't keen, she stays upstairs and on the odd occasion he ventures up there she hisses but he ignores her, he's now 5 and it has never changed! We also have an ex feral who decided she'd like to move indoors a couple of years ago, she's a bit younger than the others. She lives entirely downstairs and eldest cat loathes her!

thelobsterquadrille · 22/11/2022 08:31

We've done it.

Personally I would go for a male kitten rather than have three females but that's just personal preference.

Ours are 7, 6 and 2 now and get on famously. They're all indoor cats and none are related.

I was thinking male kitten as well. I think there would be a bit of a power struggle with 3 girls. Plus we have a big cat next door who they both play with and adore. My neighbour sends my videos of littlest cat rolling around next to her cat flirting like crazy!

Just booked in for a homecheck! Eek!

Good luck 😁

I'm really glad we got our third and he actually brought our big grumpy boy out of his shell - they now play together, wrestle and groom each other!

It's very sweet though big grumpy boy would never admit to being sweet 😂

Well we have passed the homecheck!

Just waiting for the little one to recover from his cat flu and to be big enough to come and join us!

We'd love a third. Oldest cat struggles enough to accept Dcat2 though and doesn't handle stress well. However, if she survives until our planned move in 18 months and settles okay then I've promised the family we can get a kitten as Dcat2 would love a playmate (she's a lot more playful than Dcat1).

Your new addition looks lovely, OP, good luck.

thelobsterquadrille · 26/11/2022 18:40

How exciting! Good luck with your new addition 😍

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 27/11/2022 08:02

Well he seems to be over the worst of the cat flu and has just started eating by himself so they can start to stop the syringe feeds.

The rescue have named him Montgomery, it suits him so he will be Lord Montgomery Fluffy Paws but probably just Monty at home.

Slightly different situation here but we have a 4 year old m/f sibling pair and recently acquired an 11 year old female after a bereavement. We introduced her to the house and existing cats very slowly (a month before she was given the run of the house unsupervised) but they're getting on fine and to our surprise the existing pair seem to have readily accepted the newcomer as the alpha (presumably recognising that she's older).

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 27/11/2022 09:18

I have two sibling pair and got a new male in august. We are now at the stage where the older ones will sit with him without hissing and they will eat near him now

I think they are pretty easy cats tho as we have moved and got a puppy in last 3 years so change isn't so alien to them

Kitten and dog are best friends

We had 2 cats large half main coon fluffy male and small timid female. My son came home from work and said his friend and his wife split up. She went back to parents and took dog. He had to move into shared house but not allowed Bengal cat. Son asked if we could take him. I said yes. Bengal cat very friendly with humans but detests other cats, but ok with our 2 dogs. Used Feliway plug in and introduced very slowly. Bengal terrorised both my cats. In the end he had to live upstairs and my 2 cats downstairs. This meant Bengal could not come and go as he pleased. Now my son moved into his own house has taken Bengal with him. Bengal very happy and uses cat flap to come and go. My cats spend most time curled up in warm in lounge in cat palace. Some cats will not live with others.

So total turnaround!

I met another cat at the same rescue... he's an older black and white boy who has been up for adoption for a little while but had absolutely no interest. Partly because he isn't a teensy kitten and partly because black and whites are always the last to be chosen.

He is affectionate, playful, loves attention and is in foster with other cats who he loves to play with.

So we are picking him up on Tuesday!!!

He is totally going to fit in with the current cat colour scheme!

Say hello to Maverick! (And his two big sisters who can't wait to meet him!)

Aww he's lovely, can't believe he's been overlooked.

Update!!

Alfie has been with us for a week and a half now. The girls love him, there was a couple of days of hissing during initial introductions but I am currently watching Alfie and Betsy chase each other round in circles of the living room whilst making little chirruping noises.

Alfie's fosterer has done a sterling job with him as he is so well socialised, playful and incredibly affectionate kitten we have ever had.

If you are undecided about cat number 3 then I would say go for it!

(Maverick didn't suit him so he was "mister cat" for a few days until we settled on Alfie)

That's a lovely update. So glad it's turned out well.

HowCanIPayItForward · 09/12/2022 03:29

Ah what a gorgeous boy! So pleased he's settled in well

daschundthroughthesnow · 09/12/2022 04:33

He is beautiful! So glad he's settled in so well :)

wickedstepmothfker · 11/12/2022 09:46

We have 3. At the time the oldest was 14 (pet shop), the younger one 2yo rescue and I was after a pedigree breeding cat. For obvious reasons the pedigree kitten was going to be a house cat. The other 2 were very outdoorsy and as I bought the kitten during summer they saw their arses and avoided the house for months (only coming in to eat). Come winter though they swallowed their pride and a pecking order was quickly established 🤣
