Itchy fur pulling cat

we have 2 older rescue cats, mum (13 ish) and daughter (11 ish), been with us for 6 months. When they arrived form RSPCA they'd had many operations and remedial care having been very neglected after their previous owner died. D cat 2 had multiple bald patches and dry flaky skin...and didn't love us for ages.

Roll on to the last month. Took D cats to vet for their vaccinations. Dcat 2 skin sooo much better just one place where hair had been pulled less than 10 pence piece sized. Vet said too poorly for vaccinations. Gave steroids and antibiotics....which I gave and cat completed...but she's now awful...pulling hair at least 6 patches bigger than 3 cm across with no hair. No changes at home, the only difference was the medication.

They are both indoor cats but have been fleed and wormed regularly

Any advice from you lovely cat people??

It could be all sorts - allergies, stress, habit, urinary issues - did the vet give her a full check up?

Hi Sorry for absence.

Both cats came to us with full vet checks and history.
They have both had full vet checks.

The home environment and food haven't changed in the 10 days. The only new thing was the drugs and the stress of going to the vet :(

I suppose I am very sad that 6 months of excellent progress without pills with good care grooming and diet have gone in 10 days. I know it might be coincidence but the transformation from a tiny healing sore to multiple extending sores has been dramatic...and of course now she definitely won't be able to have her vaccinations.

If anyone has any wisdom I'd love to help her feel comfy in her skin again.

It may not be the drugs - it could be stress. Some cats react really, really badly to stress.

If nothing else has changed and she's stopped the medication, I would just carry things on as normal.

thank you.

I'm hoping that as she got better before she'll get better again. I feel so sorry for her...she looks so motheaten and dejected!

In going through this with one of mine, we found a wobbly tooth that we had removed and we think something's happened outside as she's scared to go out. We're giving Zylkene and using feliway but she's also started scratching again. I'm trying different litter to see if that helps, it's so frustrating.

so sorry your Dcat is going through the same thing
