Novice question about cats and fleas...

Hi,

Our kittens have fleas :( goodness knows how as they haven't even been out yet, and have been with us since September... but perhaps a stray mouse?

We have just put on the Advantage treatment on the back of their necks, and I have ordered some of Indorex spray for the carpets/sofas etc...

But what do we do about everything else? E.g. all the wool stuff they come into contact with (my lovely wool jumpers, the wool throws we have) we can't boil wash any of these!

Do we need to wash literally EVERYTHING or is there come kind of spray that also kills eggs?

And also, is it really necessary to boil wash or can you just use cold water? Will that kill the eggs or is it useless?

Thanks!

@Blocked is that true?! We’ve kept them locked downstairs poor things so they don’t spread them around.

last time I checked I could still see a couple of (alive) fleas on them so didn’t want them getting on furniture. But if that’s the case then maybe I should let them out?

Yeah I mean the fleas will be bouncing off them for the next 24 hours or so while the treatment takes effect but after that let them go free! And don't worry too much. It's a rare house that doesn't have something try to invade at some time or another whether it be fleas, spiders, mice or random semi feral cats in the case of my house ConfusedGrin

thanks everyone! I let them out this morning :)

cant see any recurring fleas yet but guess I will at some point. the spray arrives today so we will bring doing that this afternoon.

hope everyone else with flea woes can sort theirs soon!

Update….

it’s been two weeks, we put Advantage Spot On on both cats, AND we have treated the house with Indorex… and it has not worked!I am still combing live and baby fleas off both cats each day 😣

we did such a thorough job with the Indorex, I don’t think that’s where we’ve gone wrong… I think the Advantage has just not worked!

we are going to the vet on Monday for their own treatment instead.

anyone else found Advantage hasn’t worked? I thought it was the only one (over counter) that did!

Unfortunately, fleas are starting to become resistant to Advantage in recent years so vet prescribed treatments like Advocate/Prinosil and similar are the only ones that really work in some parts of the country.

If your vet hasn't weighed the kittens recently they may need to do this before prescribing the treatment (to get the dosage right), but after that they should happily supply you on a regular basis.

Thanks @Allergictoironing fingers crossed that whatever the vet gives them does the trick as we are going slightly bonkers here… and getting bitten now too.

it’s scary that most over the counter ones no longer seem to work isn’t it? They must just have to get stronger and stronger.
