Cat weeing

Hello all,
I am looking for some advice if possible. We have always had cats and never really had too much of a problem with weeing but lately our little British Blue has taken to weeing on the carpet and pooing on the mat.
To be honest, he's also turned into a little thug! He's 18 month old and a house cat along with our slightly older cat. When I say house cat, we have a very large catio so they have access to a large area of outside space. When we introduced him to our older little girl, they got on well. However in recent months he has taken to chasing her. She's very timid and I think he takes advantage. He just won't leave her alone and she is getting fed up. We are too because it seems constant. They both have a litter tray and our little girl uses hers without a problem. Our little thug however has decided that he is now not going to use his all the time. He does go to the toilet outside which isn't a problem. However he now just squats on the floor and wee's inside. Anywhere, not even a particular place. He does always poo in the same place on our fluffy mat. We have bought the expensive deodoriser and always clean up and hope there isn't any scent. But it's just getting so bad now. He is the most gorgeous little boy. Loved beyond loved. We play with him all the time. He comes out with me in the car and loves a good walk on his lead down the road. He's intelligent - will fetch a ball or toy. If I tell him off he will run upstairs and bring a toy or pipe cleaner to say sorry.
We have had cats all our lives but just stumped and hope you have some advice. We have tried feliway and he has had the snip.
Thank you in advance, apologies so long!

Forgot to say, we have tried a million different cat litters. It's cleaned daily - but to be honest there isn't much in it - and he has been given a clean bill of health by the vet. No medical reason for it. Praying there is a cat whisperer out there x

Sounds like he could be stressed living indoors and confined to a catio.

Is letting him out properly an option? Lots of cats don't cope indoors or in confined spaces.

Tannedandfake · 15/11/2022 22:45

Extra litter trays? Definitely where he keeps pooping

TeddyOBear · 16/11/2022 07:07

Thank you both for your replies. He has never been an outdoor cat and never shows signs of wanting to go out. Our big boy was killed on the road last summer so going out on his own isn't an option. He's very clingy and cries if he can't find us. This is all new - the weeing. The outdoor area he has is huge x

I'm sorry about your other boy.

Could it be that he's more suited to being a solo cat?

TeddyOBear · 16/11/2022 09:32

I am beginning to wonder if it's this too. Initially he and our little girl were good friends. Sleeping together and enjoying being together. They are both our babies, love them so much but the weeing is getting me down. We will just have to put up with it as couldn't rehome either of them. Thank you though, really appreciate your advice and taking the time to reply x

I'd maybe contact the vet just to ensure there's no underlying issues. Have you tried a feliway diffuser? I'd definitely get another litter tray.
Mine only get out into the garden supervised but I've got the protectapet fencing. So mine are predominantly housecats. You couldn't let him roam, he'd maybe get stolen or something. Mumsnet have a bit of an aversion to housecats. Housecats seem to live happily imo.

Ludo19 · 16/11/2022 12:16

BTW OP he's absolutely gorgeous 😍

Ah thank you. He's beautiful inside and out - apart from the thug tendency with his sister and the weeing x yes tried the feliway diffusers and he's been checked by the vet. Yes he never wants to go out unless he's with us anyway. Even with the garden door open he doesn't venture. Generally he's a happy little boy. I think we will try the extra litter tray - thank you x - and have to just try and deal with it.

The pooing on the fluffy mat might be texture? Easy to hide a wee poo? I'd lift the mat, make it so he's not getting comfy and no other option but to use his tray.
The peeing could be a dominance behaviour especially as now he's technically a teenager (cat yrs) also he's now asserting his authority over his older sister. It may be that. The poo is easier to deal with than the pee. I'm guessing he's not spraying and actually doing a piddle?

I'm sorry for not properly reading that you've been to the vet and used feliway....I'm not guilty of that but I scrolled right to his picture. He's a wee cracker and looks extremely intelligent. Other than getting another tray and lifting his poo mat I'm stumped but good luck in persevering.

Ah bless you, I wrote such an essay it wasn't easy reading and I appreciate your help! Yes proper wee's. He's done two today and a poo on the mat. I read that the mat pooing may be because of the texture too! So I am going to try what you said and lift the rug. We've put another litter tray behind the tv and covered the floor of that area with some plastic. We have tried some herbal calming drops on the back of his neck this evening. We got them from the vet a little while ago and he has relaxed a bit. Thank you Ludo for your lovely message. He is a wonderful little soul, absolutely adored! Just got to get over this. I think he might be a bit stressed. As I said, he is really clingy and although nothing has changed at home, if he can't see us he pines or cries.
Anyway, thank you again, really appreciate you taking the time to reply and your advice x

I do feel your pain. My boy piddled on my beanbag.....he thought it was filled with litter 🙄 he did it 2/3 times and it stank.
Got rid of it and he's not done it since, but he did pee on my duvet after bonfire night but I put that down to fright. I did tell him if he done it again I'd turn him into a pair of gloves.
That's him there with his brother who has much better manners!xx

He is very cute! We experienced similar with our neutered male around the same age. The solution was letting him out, it just stopped. However, sadly he was hit by a car. I just think letting him have those months of being free and outside was better than him being unhappy and keeping him inside for the rest of his life

TeddyOBear · 16/11/2022 21:15

Oh they are beautiful!!! Absolutely gorgeous. I was reading that bizarrely peeing on duvets is common when they are frightened. Not sure why it's duvets though. lol @ they bean bags. Honestly, they get away with murder don't they. If it had been one of the children I wouldn't be half as patient and forgiving xx

I can't say it's the same issue but I had a Bengal who would not pee and poop in the same litter tray! I had one tray with litter in and a second tray next to it with just a puppy pad in for her to pee in. If that wasn't clean, she'd pee on the floor somewhere... hard work but saved my carpets in the long run once I figured out her preferences!

TeddyOBear · 16/11/2022 21:24

Thank you @hartof , I'm so sorry to hear about your boy. Our big boy was killed and it was devastating. He was my absolute baby. Thankfully our little Dave isn't fussed about going out. The door could be open and he wouldn't go out. He likes the car and being carried around the garden but other than that, he's actually very content. This is wonderful Ted who we lost.

For two cats, ideally you would need 3 trays (a tray per cat plus one spare) so if you don't already have 3 trays maybe try that first (put them in different rooms/ levels of the house).
Our old cat used to do this (both with wee and poo but it was the wee that was causing the bigger problem to us). We used 'urine off for cats and kittens' which is an enzyme based cleaner that's better at removing all traces of the smell - apparently if they can still smell it at all they will keep going back in the same place. You can buy it on amazon amongst other places. Then we put feliway spray on top once it was cleaned and the area dried. It took about 2 months but he did stop - I think it was stress related. Then we bought a new rug haha.
There's also a supplement you can sprinke in food, also made by feliway, called cystease - for stress related bladder problems in cats. It's over the counter, again can be bought on Amazon but you might want to double check with your vet first.
Lastly, going outside of the litter box could be a sign of a medical problem so it might be worth a check up at the vets. Have a look at the symptoms for a urinary tract infection and if you think it might be that, get him there asap. Sometimes they can get a blockage - if he seems to be straining or have any trouble going at all, that's an emergency and you would need to get him there immediately.

Hope you find a solution, wishing you lots of luck. He's absolutely gorgeous

TeddyOBear · 16/11/2022 21:47

Thank you so
Much for your reply and advice @User3456. He's medically ok thankfully. I did wonder if if was anything physically wrong but the vet has cleared him as being well. We have the enzyme spray but I will def try the feliway spray you mentioned. We have an extra litter tray from this evening so will see how this goes. Thank you so
Much x he is gorgeous, he's happily snoring next to me in bed - spoilt! x

I'd have a look at Jackson Galaxy's YouTube videos. I suspect this is a territory issue and I'm sure there's a solution.

I'm a big fan of a catio. Not all cats are suited to roam free.

User3456 · 16/11/2022 22:02

That's brilliant he's medically ok. Fingers crossed the extra litter tray helps 🤞🤞🤞
Good luck

TeddyOBear · 16/11/2022 22:29

Thank you so much @Voice0fReason and @User3456. The video by Jackson galaxy is really very good and helpful. I think our little Dave has separation anxiety. He cries when we aren't with him or he is in another room. I come home to find soft toys by the back door. He's always been very clingy and I think this might be it. The excitement from him when we get home is mad and actually, the weeing has got worse since we had a week away. We had a cat sitter so he was settled in his own home, but I think this has triggered it. Thank you all for your help and advice and just being able to chat things through has been great.
