Teddy the Terror, 15 weeks old when can we neuter (pics)!

Teddy boy is 15 weeks old and in the last two weeks has become a terror!

He does not sit still, into everything, up the curtains, digging the soil out of my house plants, nipping us and generally just mad.

Vet has said we can't neuter or chip him until he's 2kg and he's only 1.6kg. Does this sound right as some people say 10 weeks onward.

Will he calm down after he's done, can he then go out as he sits on the windowsill and is desperate to get out there!

Pics attached, he's adorable and so affectionate and very loved 😻

I can’t remember the weight recommendation but I know we tried to hold out to 16weeks he was 15&half weeks
He will calm down, especially when he can start going out - get some of those elastic on the end of a stick toys and wear him out (or try to)
He is beautiful xx

Those legs!

barkyy · 11/11/2022 23:22

We were told 5 months for our female cat

dementedpixie · 11/11/2022 23:26

Normally OK from 4 months
Some vets still say 6 months. There's a kitten neutering database with vets that do it at 4 months

I see he's in the lengthening period.

PollyCreo · 12/11/2022 12:44

Oh my, that picture of him scaling the ironing board!🙀😹 What a determined little bugger, hope you manage to get him sorted soon 🤞

Lonecatwithkitten · 12/11/2022 15:26

Neutering is not going to alter his behaviour what you are describing is normal kitten behaviour - they climb everything, are into everything and try to eat just about anything.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/11/2022 18:23

I thought vets would do it from 8weeks now.

dementedpixie · 12/11/2022 18:33

A lot still say 6 months. It's recommended from 4 months. Not sure many would do it at 8 weeks as they would still be tiny

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/11/2022 18:37

The CPL place I got my DCat from said they get them done at 8weeks. They won’t let people adopt kittens/cats un neutered.

GuppytheCat · 12/11/2022 18:37

Our vets will do it from 1kg, pre-rehoming, for rescue kittens, so around nine to ten weeks. It seems tiny to me but in fact we’ve seen them bounce back almost immediately (and literally).

workingmumuk · 12/11/2022 18:43

My cat is 4/5 years old and still climbs furniture, runs around, nips occasionally when he's hungry and food bowl is empty. He's neutered.

What calmed him down was learning his behaviour and what it meant he wanted, using treats to reward calm behaviour, and letting him go outside.

Watch Jackson Galaxy on YouTube - loads of great cat/kitten behaviour advice.

dementedpixie · 12/11/2022 19:04

The kitten neutering database (linked above) for the vets in my area seem to say they do owned kittens at 4 months and feral (and I suppose rescue kittens probably) from weaning age so that would be much younger

Roselilly36 · 12/11/2022 19:13

Aww he’s adorable 🥰

Lonecatwithkitten · 13/11/2022 07:28

It is general accepted that owned cats are done from 4 months. Rescues do neuter earlier how ever there is a slight increased anaesthetic risk which is deemed acceptable in charity cases, but not in owned cars.

Lonecatwithkitten · 13/11/2022 07:29

Owned cats that is.

Whatdoyawannado · 13/11/2022 08:53

I'm a vet nurse and we do it from 4 months as long as over 2kg.

thelobsterquadrille · 13/11/2022 09:02

Even if you got him neutered tomorrow, he's still far too young to go outside. He wouldn't stand a chance.

That makes sense. A bit chilled to realise that our beloved Guppy, fostered with us from birth and somehow never left, was an ‘acceptable risk’ when done at barely a kilo.

We didn’t have a choice; she was the rescue’s kitten till we were allowed to adopt, and they don’t allow adoption before neutering.

GuppytheCat · 13/11/2022 09:21

Kitten tax.
Much bigger than that now.

sashh · 13/11/2022 09:49

What you have is a perfectly normal kitten.

ZandathePanda · 13/11/2022 13:05

You’ll gain a few grey hairs when he first goes out as he’ll immediately climb the highest tree and/or jump on your roof and then meow pitifully. Once you get the ladder, he’ll make his way down really precariously. You’ll put the ladder away and he’ll take that as the chance to do it again.

Lonecatwithkitten · 13/11/2022 13:13

@GuppytheCat the additional risk is very small and we all have to remember that for shelters there number one priority is to prevent any further increase in population size.

GuppytheCat · 13/11/2022 13:18

I know. Last time I was in the shelter, they had a pregnant four/five month kitten brought in and were trying to plan her care.
