Irresistible dry food?

Our new rescue cat who is five months old and was neutered a few weeks ago is prone to really soft poos. To make things worse he tends to step in his poo when covering it, getting it on his feet and between his toes.🙄

The vet recommended we'll start feeding him a dry food only diet but I have struggled to find any that he actually likes other than some cheap whiskas which is of course just junk.

Can anyone recommend a brand or food, or is there a way of sampling them rather than buying half a kilo of something that then doesn't get eaten?

The other issue we have is that he is incredibly greedy, he will help himself to any (human) food that he sees and we have to shut him out of the room when eating/cooking. Even things like a loaf of bread he'll eat. He will also chase our older cat away from her bowl if he's in the same room and eat her food so we have to feed them separately. Our other cat is very picky with her food and only ears Felix (have tried all sorts of better brands) which we don't want the kitten to eat.

Is there anything we can do to discourage this behaviour?

We give ours some Crave biscuits with their evening meal , we don;t leave biscuits out for them though .

Our kitten is very fussy but will happily eat the Lily's kitchen dry food. He hates the Lily's kitchen wet food though and will only eat Blink.

Thanks both. Our kitten eats pretty much any wet food but struggling with dry food, think will.try and mix some dry food with wet food to get him to try it.

Ours have James Wellbeloved and it always goes down well. If you visit the individual websites for the foods you may find you can get smaller sizes to try them out.
also, microchip operated feeder for your other cat will stop greedy guts from stealing.

My fussy madam will eat the posh dry food from Lidl, especially if it's mixed with the spring water from a tin of tuna.

My cat loves James Wellbeloved dry food.

He likes Purina as well but when the bag has been opened a few days he starts to vom it back up. Took me a while to figure that out!

Good luck sounds like a pain.

We swapped ours onto Lovebug. It's dried and made of crickets.

She loves it, but it took a while to move her onto it

Our fussy cat will only eat Royal Canin dried food - the Savor version.

EatYourFive · 12/11/2022 09:53

Thanks for the suggestions. Will head to PaH today to browse, luckily got a free voucher for Royal Canin so will try that and some others.

@hidingmyusername unfortunately my cats didn't take to Lovebug, such a shame as I really like the concept!

@dun1urkin do the microchip feeders actually work? I have been looking at them online but worried the kitten will just stick his head in and shove the older cat aside when she's feeding (like he does with her bowl) and gains access to it that way. Maybe when he grows a bit it might work, he's currently still only little at around 2.5 kg.

Yes, as soon as he shoves her away (and her neck is no longer under the arch bit at the top) the lid will close (gently!!)
He’ll learn not to bother. And feeding them in separate rooms will help. We feed one in the kitchen and one in the dining room because our boy cat is a faster greedier beast than his sister.
