Poo samples clear: 6 months kitten still has persistent diorheah

So...what on earth do we do now.

She seemed to come to us fine at about 3 months old...brown poo , reasonably frim.

Then we changed her food and went down hill, swooped around probably too much.

Then vet's sent off several poo samples covering all sorts of things.
All clear.
The moment she has antibiotics she clears up.
Probiotics don't seem to help her.

She's been on gastro sensitive royal canine for about two weeks now.

Nothing else so I would have hoped if it was her diet, thing's would have stabilised by now?

What's next?

She's currently on a very low dose of antibiotics short term.

She's a ragdoll cross.

My Persian has this. Also on Royal Canin, the wet not dry as she can’t tolerate the dry and poo explosions happen. Vet diagnosed as colitis. When she has a flare up she goes on steroids for 2 weeks and that sorts it out. Also a paste that you squeeze on the food that looks like marmite and firms up the stools. Sorry I can’t remember what it’s called! 🤦‍♀️
Can you ask the vet to try steroids? Also plain boiled chicken to eat, nothing else until she had done at least 2 firm stools. This is the second pedigree I’ve had with this issue so fairly experienced at dealing with it!

PlatinumBrunette · 05/11/2022 11:41

It will be the food, usually the filler Eg grains, wheat, whatever. She’s allergic to something in it. Look for a grain-free food. Really good quality. Applaws is one we had success with. Our vet tried to get us on their recommendation for the same, but a) she didn’t like it and lost loads of weight and b) it still had crap in it.

Puddywoodycat · 05/11/2022 11:57

@Chardonnay73

It's the dry royal canin she is on..

Vet mentioned steroids but only as a longer term thing he said wasnt good.
He didn't mention short term.

Puddywoodycat · 05/11/2022 11:58

Also how did vet diagnosis it

Zippea · 05/11/2022 12:01

My cat had tritriconomas foetus parasite and ended up on an experimental drug for pigeons that affected her neurologically so we stopped it. She has been on sensitive duck and rice dry for years and has been fine since

PlatinumBrunette · 05/11/2022 12:05

Puddywoodycat · 05/11/2022 11:58

Also how did vet diagnosis it

Blood in poo, severe diarrhoea. Vet said ‘it’s usually a food issue, try this’. She ate a bit, poo cleared up, then she stopped eating it so I did some research, found grain free food she’d eat, no problems since 🤷‍♀️ Apart from stopping the other cats eating her expensive food 😄

Puddywoodycat · 05/11/2022 12:08

Surely this gastrointestinal sensitive royal canin won't have grain etc?

What's sensitive duck and rice?

OP posts:
Puddywoodycat · 05/11/2022 12:08

@Zippea
We've had all those tests back negative

What sort of applewas. .

Is that wet or dry?

I’d honestly go back to the vet and talk about steroids. Mine said she can stay on a low dose if needs be, but touch wood it’s settled at the moment. In the meantime boiled chicken, and that paste on it. I think this is it, I just get it from Pets at Hone. It’s is a probiotic but also has kaolin in it to firm up the stools.

Maybe try the wet Royal Canin once it has settled.

@PlatinumBrunette

Wet. For kittens, and she only likes fish, because fussy 🙄

I’m not a fan of feeding animal brown balls, but they all have James Wellbeloved biscuits out all the time which they all love and keeps the food bill down.

I’ve just looked at the ingredients of the vet’s stuff and there is a lot of non-food in there imho. And she could be allergic to duck! Try turkey instead. It’s said to be the least allergenic of anything. I have a dog who is allergic to lamb and venison, so they are all a total pain in the butt to accommodate.

Floralnomad · 05/11/2022 12:19

My mum had a Ragdoll that had 2 bowel resections and ongoing loose stools and the only things he could eat were the Royal Canin sensitivity pouches and fresh prawns . He loved dry food but was only allowed a small amount twice a week or it made him really bad .

TicTac80 · 05/11/2022 12:36

Reading with interest as my 7m old MC has had been having diarrhoea on and off over past few days. I spotted a small amount of blood in his poo on Tuesday, and got him to the vet. I was paranoid about FIP, but the only symptom Chewie has had is the diarrhoea. He is eating like a gannet and still full of beans.

The vet prescribed the Hills Prescription Gastro Biome dry food, and a prebiotic paste. He also gave him two shots with (I think antibiotics, anti inflammatories and a steroid).

I have to collect poo samples but he didn’t poo until this morning and it was firm/normal (and didn’t reek like it did before!). I’ve nabbed a sample of it anyway, and will continue to collect and probs just ask them to test it anyway.

Prior to this, he had a bout of diarrhoea within the first week of being with us, but that cleared quickly and vet wasn’t concerned. I was feeding him grain free dry and raw food then. Little git won’t eat raw now, so it’s been grain free dry food and grain free, high meat content wet food. I’ve got another 3 cats, and he’ll nick their food too, so I just feed them the same thing.

it’s almost a relief to hear that this is quite common!! I may switch the dry food to the Hills as it seems to help.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/11/2022 13:03

My Persian also doesn't tolerate royal canon. But is fine on the low fat varieties of Iams. The vet gave her some Kaolin paste when her colitis flared up.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/11/2022 13:04

I tried the sensitive with my cat and her stomach was having none of it!

Puddywoodycat · 05/11/2022 14:05

@TicTac80

I'm wondering why our vet didn't prescribe this food? Looks like needs vet to allows you to buy it?

What are the anti inflammatory

My cat's been really sore and only been given antibiotics wondering why not been offered all this other stuff?
I was crying in there the other day!

Puddywoodycat · 05/11/2022 14:06

@Toddlerteaplease

Do you mean the gastro royal canin I'm giving..
And when you say stomach having non ot it do you mean dirorha

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 05/11/2022 14:10

@Puddywoodycat not diarrhoea, but huge amounts of sick. I had no idea cats could produce so much. The rescue had already tried her on RC Persian and exigent. I tried her on the gastro one. The only thing that stopped it was swapping to Iams indoor cat, or light in fat. Iams senior gave her bloody diarrhoea. And the standard adult variety have her loose stools. So we are back to indoor cat.

Puddywoodycat · 05/11/2022 15:15

@TicTac80

Is the hills prescription is that for kittens?
My vet is absolutely obsessed with kitten food so Maybe that's why he hasn't mentioned?

OP posts:
TicTac80 · 05/11/2022 15:22

@Puddywoodycat I’m not 100% sure why one thing was prescribed over the other. My vet mentioned the meds (injections and paste), the dry gastro food (Chewie is NOT happy as im only meant to give him 80g of this food per day and nothing else!) but also poo samples. I’m praying it’s an easy fix and not FIP. I did try to get a sneaky look at the vials of meds the vet used for the injections, but only spotted the steroid name (which I can’t remember now!!). They’re different drug names from ones I’m used to seeing (I’m a nurse but for humans!!).

I’ve attached a screenshot of the food he prescribed, but it does look like it can be bought over counter too. If this is the case, I’m tempted to speak to vet about whether i need to continue with this specific dry food, whether it is worth making the switch so all my cats can have it (otherwise I keep Chewie on it and will have to buy special feeding bowls that is accessed through reading microchip).

we are nearly 48hrs in since seeing vet and having the shots, new food, paste etc and he’s been fine since. I’m really hoping it’s a one off!
