Xmas tree Vs. The cat

How do I stop the 1 year old devil cat eating the tree?!? He chews everything. He’ll have a go at all the plants in the house, real or fake.

Our current tree is pre lit - will be blow himself up 💥😆🤦🏽‍♀️💥 should we go real this year?

there isn’t really space to put the tree in a room where he is not able to access it although I do WFH so am around 80% of the time to potentially drag him off it 😆

We don't have a tree for this reason!

I guess other people just get creative:

My dd tried the placing satsumas under the tree trick. And it worked!!

Akite · 26/10/2022 08:35

The first year we used a water spray when our cat tried to climb inside the tree. It worked, after a couple of tries he then left it alone and hasn't touched it since (several years on)

Satsumas and water - noted!

We have three cats and no longer bother with a Christmas tree Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/10/2022 08:44

My cats would see those trees as A Challenge Halloween Grin

First Christmas (cats were 18 months old)

Pre-lit , no decorations , lights on static.
Female cat was in there (less than a week)

Seond Christmas , less than four days .

Third Christmas and coming up to fourth , no tree .

They have won Grin

Get a real tree. They hate the smell. Ours won’t go near it.

Littleredbrickmammy · 28/10/2022 08:51

They don’t hate the smell of a real tree. We get one every year and our cat still goes up it. We just weight it down so she can’t topple it and all the ornaments are either wood or felt - unbreakable.

Hahaha.

Some cats LOVE the smell. It's like citrus - cats are supposed to hate citrus smells (hence the satsuma trick) especially lemon, DBro lost his lemon drizzle cake to one of his on more than one occasion

BarbaraofSeville · 28/10/2022 08:55

He won't blow himself up, lights are low voltage. He may however bite through the cable and plunge your tree into darkness. ask me how I know

Obviously glass baubles are a no no due to breakage.

Be prepared to find baubles everywhere for weeks afterwards because he will see your tree as a marvellous display of exciting toys that he'll take down to play with.

Don't do what we did the first year we had kittens. We went out to the pub on Christmas Eve and on return found that they had pulled out their presents, opened them, taken them out of the packaging and destroyed them. Because they had been bought catnip mice by DM Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 28/10/2022 08:59

We've always had cats and a Christmas tree. It doesn't always go well, but there's been no disasters, only hilarity and minor inconveniences.

Like the time we put it up while one of the cats was outside and he did the biggest double take ever when he came back and saw what had appeared in the living room in his absence.

Don't put bells on the tree if it's in ear shot of the bedroom (we're quite open plan) because they will play with them all night.

HippyChickMama · 28/10/2022 09:01

I got the gingerbread ones of these last year and it worked. You can get them in Home Bargains quite cheaply. The smell only deters them for about a week though so you need to change them or add new ones. I also sprayed the base of the tree regularly with cat deterrent that smells of oranges

Also following as our kitten will be keen!

I know my brother put a hook on their ceiling and ties the tree to the hook with fishing wire.

I have 3 young cats in my house as well as an older one, this year l am going to decorate the trees and shrubs outside, in the front and back garden, mini fairy lights etc, and just place a few decorations out of reach inside, easier said than done, l know. To be honest l haven't bothered with a tree for a good few years now, cats or not, Amazon do some lovely red and gold Xmas lights, (sunset 2) that give out a beautiful warm cosy glow.
