Cat diabetes

My cat had lots of bloods done yesterday, very traumatised by it all (both of us!)
Testing for diabetes anyone experience of this it all sounds hideous by what I've read and I'm so worried

My dcat had diabetes, we injected him in the neck fold twice daily. It was never an issue because he is a VERY food motivated boy, so I used to do it when he was eating. Then one day he stopped needing it. We were very lucky because I came home from work at an unusual time - he was slipping into a coma so I rubbed honey on his gums and drove at high speed to the vets. He was fine after a day at the vets and never needed insulin again.
The injections take a bit of getting used to and going away was problematic as he needed someone who knew how to do it to look after him, but we managed ok.

The thought of testing his blood and injecting twice a day freaks me out.
I struggle to even get spot treatment on his neck!
He's really nervy as well and the thought of having to leave him at the vets is stressing me out

My cat is diabetic, has been for about a year. I inject him with insulin twice a day as pp said, while he's eating. Getting his levels right was a bit of a faff. We used a libre freestyle blood glucose monitor which the vets fitted for him. I scanned him with my phone to get a reading. The vets could see his readings from their computer. We did have issues with the sensor stopping a few times but I would still recommend this approach. Once you've got the insulin level right you can just monitor symptoms, rather than needing regular blood tests. I know of my cat gets very thirsty or drops weight he needs a blood test. Honestly I was bricking it about all this too but you'll be OK.

Oh thank you so much for that I feel better.
Was you cat bothered by the libre? Send better than the ear pricking business, they just don't understand why you are hurting then and he's a one person car and really trusts me.
I'll let you know what the vet says later x

Sorry so many typos!

My cat wasn’t bothered by the injections at all, because he was eating at the time! Another trick is to do it whilst they’re sleepy!

Millymollymoomilly · 20/10/2022 10:19

Sounds like a case of being crafty, although isn't that a time element to this, like after they have eaten or something?

You have to inject them 12hrs apart. So I do half 6 am / pm. I give him his food then inject him in the scruff while he's eating. I was all thumbs at first but cat totally unbothered.

Also regarding food, we get the royal canin diabetic cat dry food. But it's very expensive. We supplement with sheba wet food. I did a good whack of research and it's fairly close to the Royal canin wet in terms of its sugar and carb content but doesn't cost as much.

I have a notepad and write down what time I've injected him. Means dh doesn't also inject him. Learnt from an error there after a panicked trip to the emergency vet!

You mind me asking for much the insulin and associated products cost per month please and do you buy from the vets or online?

For info the because it depends what your vet prescribes...

I get these needles: www.petdrugsonline.co.uk/prozinc-u-40-insulin-syringes-120-pack

So that's 60 days worth for £52.

Then I buy the prozinc insulin from the vet. My cat needs 3.5 units a shot, which is pretty high dose I think. The cost is £125 per little glass bottle and it looks like it lasts maybe 3 months but i sent be precise. I'm going off bank statements showing I bought it 28 April, 7 July, 26 Aug and still going. I think I got out of whack due to a holiday.

I'm thinking it's maybe £90 a month.

It cant be helped though, imo.

You also need a sharps bin, which you fill and then return to the vet. It's a fiver or something and lasts several months.

Millymollymoomilly · 20/10/2022 16:02

Thank you that's helpful

Another voice for it being a lot easier than I thought it would be

The needle is so fine I don't think my cat really noticed that much we soon got into the swing of it
