My 4 year old cat suddenly started marking near the front door (pee sometimes poo). I've got a few cats they have lived together years. I bought an extra litter tray and put it in a separate area. I bought feliway. We recently lot our dog. I'm wondering if its something to do with this as the dog slept near the front door. My cat is healthy no issues. I have tried everything. He using the front door mat indoor. My cat goes in and out via the back door when he wants. I can't figure out why he's started doing it he is neutered.

It sounds behavioural, but you should have a vet check to rule out medical problem.
When you have a soiling problem you need one litter tray per cat plus a spare. I would suggest a Feliway optimum plug in.
Cleaning up ensure you are not using any ammonia containing products as they will make the problem worse.
This is an excellent resource on managing inappropriate soiling.

@Lonecatwithkitten I've already done all that it's in my post that's why I asked for advice.

Wow snippy response there op, probably wont help encourage other people to share advice.

If you want a vet's opinion, go to a vet. If you want general advice, ask an online forum.

When my neutered boy started peeing on the front door mat it was related to an unneutered tomcat who had started visiting the area and was scent marking, but not spraying, by the front door. Washed inside and out with biological washing liquid (the enzymes break down the odour - there are pet specific products that do the same thing but are more expensive) and removed the doormat for a couple of weeks. It broke the habit.

The resource I provided is considered the world's best on inappropriate soiling as it is put together by leading feline vets and behaviourists.
I hope this helps others who are open to helping spend a little time on solving their cats problems.

Wow snippy response from you. If you actually bothered to read my original post it would be helpful rather than just sarcasm.

I bought feliway extra littertrays and my cats not unwell. It's inside near the front door where he's marking which is unusual. He does go out the house but not marked the door outside

Are you sure your cat is actually marking?
As opposed to being unwell.

I'd get him checked out by the vet to see if there is an underlying health condition that may have resulted in this change of behaviour.

Stickytreacle · 23/10/2022 18:19

Try lifting the doormat and placing a litter tray there which can be gradually moved once he's using it. A couple of mine loved a rubber backed mat in preference to their litter tray.

I assume he is using the other litter trays in the house? If not it could be the location, type of litter or even type of litter tray.
Always worth checking for urinary crystals or cystitis which can be brought on by stress, such as the loss of your dog.

Just to clarify, with my boy, it was another unneutered tomcat who was hanging around outside who was upsetting mine to make him want to mark his own territory by peeing on the hall doormat. I was suggesting that your cat may be reacting to an “intruder”and, even if you may not be able to smell anything outside, your cat might whether or not he is marking outside himself.

I have a multi cat household too and, while they may not fight, there are underlying tensions which do cause stress and the dynamics alter when one dies. Personally, I’ve never found Feliway to be very effective with my cats.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/10/2022 21:03

My bengals recurrent uti never caused him to look poorly but he’d wee inappropriately so I’d get a urine sample off him for the vets.

Sitdowncupoftea · 23/10/2022 21:13

@Foxfeeder I will keep an eye out for any cats there was one lurking about. I live rural and people regularly dump them around here. I've often taken them to the rescue as I have four cats already.

Afaik Lonecat IS a vet - she provided a link to a resource fully answering your question, which you seem to have ignored. So yes, snippy.

Got2besoon · 23/10/2022 21:30

Longcat's advice was spot on.

OP, you didn't actually say you had done those things in your opening post, so I'm really unsure why you're so short with someone trying to help you.

You said you had got another tray but this doesn't mean you have one for each cat and a spare.

You said you have a Feliway but not a Feliway Optimum.

You didn't acknowledge the excellent link; if you'd clicked it, it has brilliant advice for this exact issue.

Claiming this isn't a medical issue yet you haven't even been to the vet is bizarre. Have you analysed his urine at home? He could have microscopic crystals or his urinary pH may be wrong.
