Tinned cat food

Is it me or is tinned cat food becoming a thing of the past?

Admittedly I havent traipsed around every supermarket and pet store in town, but dont want to, if I am correct.

I can find plenty of cat pouches.

Mine has Applaws kitten food as a snack (half a tin a day). She's 7 but it's a kind of morning routine thing. Her main food is Purina kibble.

dementedpixie · 18/10/2022 15:28

Pets at home sell tins I think. Or buy online from zooplus

dementedpixie · 18/10/2022 15:28

I assume you mean large tins rather than the tiny ones too

JudithHarper · 18/10/2022 15:29

I don't think any of the brands do standard size tinned cat food anymore.

dementedpixie · 18/10/2022 15:38

Whiskas, Classic and some supermarkets have their own make larger tins

Geminio · 18/10/2022 15:50

We get More cat food in 200g tins, it’s pretty expensive. Haven’t seen tinned cat food in supermarkets for ages.

thelobsterquadrille · 18/10/2022 16:37

Butchers do a tinned cat food.

lightand · 19/10/2022 13:03

Thanks for the messages

Not just me then. Tins[baked bean size] disappearing.

I dont think our cat feels as full after some pouches. Could be wrong. It has always been a bit of a fussy cat.

I do go in different supermarkets occasionally. I will keep my eyes open for those still selling tins.

You might have more luck in pets at home as they stock a larger range of pet food

ChickyNuggies · 19/10/2022 13:29

Asda's own brand Tiger still comes in cans - £8 for 12. Weirdly the only thing one of mine can eat without getting diarrhea.

Pixiedust1234 · 19/10/2022 13:48

Sainsburys sell a couple of flavours in tins. Own brand and butchers classic. I was looking for tins instead of pouches for environmental reasons and i think its awful that the choice isn't there. I guess pouches are cheaper to make.

dontknowwhatisbest · 19/10/2022 13:59

DCat has katkin which is in a tin sized pouch iyswim - so one pouch is enough food for the whole day, which he has across three meals. Overall I think it is less packaging than four regular pouches which I think would add up to around the same amount (he only has wet food, no dry).

It is more expensive than tins though so it depends what you are looking for!

lightand · 19/10/2022 15:23

Again, thanks for the comments

Asda and Sainsbury happen to be the supermarkets furthest away. And Pets at Home even further.
But I do want go get tins so will stock up when I am next in one of them.
Glad some are still doing tins.

The cat is small and a bit picky, but doesnt seem to find two pouches very filling. Will keep an eye out for the larger Katkin pouch.

I think you might be focusing on the wrong thing. Not all cat food is created equally. Some have higher meat percentage, others are grain free etc.

What is the meat percentage on the pouch?

CornedBeef451 · 19/10/2022 15:55

I don't like pouches for lots of reasons so I buy tins from Zooplus and get it delivered.

There's lots of different brands online, I have to get a fairly high meat content one as one of my cats has the foulest farts on any supermarket brands.

I have got about 3 different brands on the go.
Will have a look tomorrow.

Depends what is in the pouch as to whether the cat is full.

Ours get a pouch and a half each a day and are full - but it's Canagan which is all meat no filler.

Zooplus is the answer for tins - loads of choice and no carrying them home.

lightand · 21/10/2022 16:16

The pouches I have are
Tesco, 1 ordinary felix and one over 7 felix.

the tesco one has 82% moisture.
protein 8%
and some vit and mineral sort things

is the protein the meat content?

JohnsShirt · 21/10/2022 16:26

Morrisons do, I bought some yesterday

Pixiedust1234 · 21/10/2022 21:45

This is for the felix as good as it looks, listed on the sainsburys site. Animal derivatives is skin, gristle, etc and not what humans consider as meat so aim for the actual meat content which is 4% for beef, 8% for chicken

Pixiedust1234 · 21/10/2022 21:51

I had a quick look at tesco poultry
Meat and Animal Derivatives (42%, including 4% Turkey),

The main meat is still only 4% but meat derivatives is 42% compared to felix of 14%. Does he seem less or more hungry after a particular brand?

Livinghappy · 21/10/2022 21:58

400g tins are tricky to locate. Co-op have Whiskas Salmon. Local small shops often have tins.Asda& Sainsbury have own brands in tins but my cats don't like them.

I find the pouches so environmentally unfriendly so would prefer tins.

DatingDinosaur · 21/10/2022 22:01

It's not your imagination OP. I can only find "6-pack" tins in the bigger supermarkets now. Individual tins still sold in local shops but its either chicken or chicken flavour.

I don't think I've seen Wiskas supermeat (ie non jelly, non gravy) since before lockdown. My cat gets horrendous squits with the gravy pouches and often turns her nose up at the jelly ones.

I don't think the pouches are even the size of a single meal and definitely not value for money. The environmental aspect is appalling too. Apart from that, they're great Grin

Shame on you cat food suppliers.
