Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap

Does anyone have this? We have managed by keeping the back door ajar as I’ve never been that keen on catflaps . But now it’s getting colder we can’t really afford to keep doing that!

Our cat is in at night and only allowed out when we are at home.

I’d be keen to hear from anyone that has one.

Yes, we have 5 of them going through our wall. Cats are fine with it.

Thank you. And apologies as you did say that in your previous post.

I’m now thinking that fitting through the wall would be preferable to the door. Did you have a professional fit it? Ours was a new build house 3 years ago and we got the builder, who was still on site at the time, to make a hole through for the tumble dryer vent so I’m thinking this would be a similar job?

Hi, a builder bored the hole through the wall for us ( he was on site anyway) and DH fitted the actual flap and extensions, though he is quite handy. The builder used a drill adaptation that just cut out a perfect circle for us.
I would just be a bit careful about the drop on the other side. We have a garden cube seat to help the cats get up to ours as it would be too high externally otherwise.

helpfulperson · 13/10/2022 14:01

Mine goes through alot of batteries, partly I think because 4he cats sit on the srep outside so it registers their chips and unlocks a lot more often than they come in.

I love the app especially when I'm away and they are being looked after by the catsitter.

Foxfeeder · 13/10/2022 14:30

When we got ours about 4 years ago, I’m sure I read that there was an issue with some models going through batteries at a rate of knots. It may have been the brown ones?

We’ve got 4 cats in and out all day and use Duracell batteries - which last at least a year.

Thank you everyone. Help v much appreciated.

i know I’m late coming to this post…I’ve got one with a hub for my 4 cats. Brilliant bit of kit! I bought it in August, and have just changed the batteries this morning. :)

That sounds great. How long did it take the cats to get used to it?

How long the cats take to get used to it varies.

Our current foster mum got up to speed in a few days after she was spayed and allowed outside. Plus one of her kittens snuck out after her once, fortunately it was while I was hanging the washing out, so I could put him back inside straight away.

Most cats seem to get it within a week or two at most but we had another foster a couple of years ago who struggled for about 3 months until she finally got it and we still have an ex 'feral finally turned tame' who refuses to use it but will happily leave through it if I carry her right up to it and push her against it so it opens but I suspect that is her feline bloody mindedness punishing me for the imprisonment in our kitten nursery when she first came to us last year with her babies.

Clymene · 25/10/2022 06:37

It didn't take my cats long at all but they were quite little when I got it and posted them through. They're massive fat fluffy beasts now so it would be less of a post and more of a shove nowadays!

We moved the flap to a different room when we had new double glazing and they got the hang of that pretty quickly

Not long at all. I switched to one of these so that I could see who was going out/coming in, and when. Also, because you are able to program in curfews (I keep all my cats indoors between sunrise and sunset), add which cats are to remain housebound and so on. I can control it remotely using my app. The cats got used to it within a day or so.

I’m going to order one this week. Thank you. It’s a lot of money so just hope she is ok with using it. We keep her in unless we are home and it’s daylight but we’ve just been leaving the back door open for her and we just can’t do that again through the winter!

I have a brown one ( chipboard front door), just replaced original we wouldn’t be without it, she loves it, and I love the freedom it gives here.
orginal lasted 8+, and have 3 yr warranty 🙂🤞

I ummed and ahhed about it for ages as my previous cat flap was also one that reads microchips, and this one is not cheap! However, we got a kitten (now 7 months old) in July, and I wanted the other cats to have the freedom to go in and out in the day, but the kitten to stay in. The old cat flap didn't have that facility.

What I do is program the app and cat flap to allow the cats in and out during day. I've set a curfew that doesn't allow them out after sunset and until sunrise (but if they're out when curfew starts, they can get back inside). I now allow the kitten out for short times when I'm there (during day) but if he somehow gets out (he's figured that if he dives out right after one of the others, he can get out on their ticket so to speak!!), he will be able to get back in. I do love that I get notifications as to when each cat goes out/comes in!! For me, that peace of mind is worth the cost.

gyarados · 26/10/2022 09:21

yes, we have an older Sureflap cat flap with curfew mode that automatically locks & unlocks at set times of day. My cat is an indoor at night cat & it works really well.

LemonRedwood · 02/11/2022 18:35

Bumping this thread in case anyone can help me...

We've had the cat flap connect for about 10 months now (the one with the hub and it links to the app) and it works really well, his Highness uses it well and it generally keeps NotMyCat out.

BUT NotMyCat has figured out that if he ambushes and tailgates his Highness, then he can get a paw in before flap closes and then he can come in too, and then he can't get back out again unless we're here to open the door and chuck him out as he's not programmed into the flap.

I was thinking if I programme NotMyCat in then I could set the permissions on the app to have his Highness allowed to come and go but NotMyCat set to 'Keep pets out' so that if he does get in by tailgating at least he can get out again. But when I did this it seemed I could only do one setting for all pets on the app (ie keep them both in for keep them both out). Has anyone managed to have different settings for different pets and if so how did you do it?

AlexaWhatsMyUsername · 05/11/2022 17:19

Ok - we’ve got it!! Checked it works with our cat’s microchip - which it does. Have a friend coming to help fit in next weekend. For now we have set up the hub. It’s obviously next to the router and now it’s like a bloody disco in the sitting room!!! Can you dim or switch off the lit up green ears and flashing light at the back?!!

LemonRedwood · 05/11/2022 18:58

You can set the ears to dim. Seem to remember it's in the app settings

In the menu, click on Household and you should see some options like this:

Whew! Thank you. I will put the app on my phone (it was only on my husbands) and get it sorted. 😎

BarbaraofSeville · 06/11/2022 05:11

Ours made a meow noise every time on of them entered until we turned it off. Quite cute but annoying at the same time.

Oopsiedaisyy · 08/11/2022 17:11

Depending on your cat, they may be able to unlock it. Well, if you have an arabian mau who seems to have opposable thumbs. I have to put a large box with bricks on it to prevent him breaking out 🙄

AlexaWhatsMyUsername · 16/11/2022 22:18

Cat flap fitted at the weekend. Not an easy job at all. Took about 4 hours with two people doing it. Looks very neat now it’s done though.

Today is my first day not at work and so we taped the cat flap door open and kept the doors from the house closed . Despite being able to see through the tunnel to the outside and feel the fresh air coming though she was VERY reluctant to go through it and just kept mewing at the back door (right next to the cat flap!). No amount of coaxing or Dreamies in the tunnel would do it. Eventually, after many hours (with a significant chicken bribes) she went out once!
When she later wanted to come back in (when it started raining) she mewed at the back door and sat outside for ages refusing to come in through the open tunnel. Finally, with another chicken bribe, we got her in through it! A whole days work (and not much chicken left for our dinner tonight!) but it’s a start! 😁

helpfulperson · 17/11/2022 13:00

Slave opening door will always be the preferred option!

Coffeepot72 · 17/11/2022 15:06

We've just got the basic version, ie microchip cat flap but without the hub. I've been really pleased with it. Our cat was already cat-flap trained, so no issues with using it.
