Cat really wants to chew - teeth problem?

I’m a relatively new cat owner and notice my cat loves to chew things. Might this point to a problem with his teeth or is there something I can get for him to enjoy biting on?

He eats fine and isn’t in pain that I can tell, so I think not a teeth problem.

I’ve looked for chews like you get for dogs, but they are all labelled specifically as being for dogs and I would be worried about giving him something to eat that’s bad for him or the wrong texture (eg might splinter or choke him). Anything marketed for cats is soft and he really wants to bite and chew.

any thoughts or options welcome please!

Silvervine sticks?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 06/10/2022 18:47

Is he allowed out? I have this issue with our cat and from what I could find online think chewing is usually boredom. Ours is indoor only so it's challenging to give him enough mental stimulation.

One of mine is a mouther & chewer. She does it much less after turned 1yo.

No idea about the chewing, but I'm afraid from that picture I think your cat is planning to murder you 😹.

How old is he? I think they teeth around 6-7 months so might be that, or it might just be boredom.

Saw this on petsathome, might do the trick!

How old is the cat and how long have you had him? I have a 3yo cat who chews my fingers all the time. I did find her (feral street kitty) pretty young, without a mother. If cats are separated too early from their mother, or had a really poor socialisation experience, they don't learn things like bite inhibition. As I've said, mine is 3yo now and it's just how she is. It tends to happen when she's playing with me or loving a bit of affection. I know when it's going to happen, so either brace myself for it or try and avoid it. She's too cute to be annoyed at.

What do you feed him, any kibble?

Allezvite · 06/10/2022 20:40

Thanks for replies!

he is 3 and we’ve had him a year. He has kibble mainly with one pouch of wet food a day. He’s allowed out whenever he wants except at night. He wants to chew stuff rather than us though he’s suddenly got a bit bitey with us too. He’s generally chilled and I don’t think he wants to kill us, he’s generally very cuddly and tactile.

Is that cat off to invade a foreign country? He looks very much in charge!

Toddlerteaplease · 06/10/2022 22:29

I'd be a bit careful what he is plotting. I'd sleep with one eye open.
