Will this confuse my cat?

Hello,
I've recently got my first cat, she is 2 years old and from a local rescue, she seems to have been a bit neglected in the past but not as far as we know to have suffered any major trauma. She's been with us nearly a week and she has become very friendly and mainly seems quite relaxed, likes to spend time following us around and sleeping on laps etc, a bit frustrated that we can't let her out in the garden yet.
The first couple of nights we let her come into our bedroom because she meowed outside the door, but because of her jumping on the bed etc during the early hours this wasn't great. I would prefer her not to sleep with us, and after reading on how to do this have started ignoring her when she asks to be let in the bedroom at night. She has plenty of toys which she knows how to play with, clean litter tray, fresh water and small meal before bed.

Firstly- is this the right thing to do to teach her she can't sleep with us?
Secondly - if she wants to come in the bedroom during the day, or after I'm awake, will letting her do so confuse her and keep her wanting to come in at night or will she understand the difference?

Thanks in advance

We let the cats sleep with us. Generally they get used to our sleep patterns (or we get used to theirs!)

Surely the only way to happiness with a cat is to let them do exactly what they want 😂 We sleep with the door proped open so she can go in and out at leisure. Other then that we accommodate her every whim - has worked well for 11 years 😂

Lindy2 · 02/10/2022 09:42

You can try.

With our cat though, if you don't let her into the bedroom, she sits outside clawing at the carpet until her slaves behave themselves and open the door.

Jumping on and off the bed and having a look at who might be awake to give you breakfast at 5am is just a normal part of a cat day.

Also after living with cats all my life I’ve concluded that they understand rules very well but quite often disagree with them and see no need to follow them - rules, in their opinion, are for dogs!

Can you close her in the utility/kitchen area, so she doesn't have access to your bedroom door? as long as it's warm enough & she has her food /water & away from them, her litter tray she'll be fine.

she's so cute though, I'd lack the self discipline not to let her on the bed!

TooMinty · 02/10/2022 09:57

Aw, she is adorable 🥰

We always shut our cats downstairs in the kitchen/utility room to sleep because I can't sleep with someone purring in my ear or standing on my head. And I don't believe 5am is a reasonable time for breakfast! They were allowed in the bedroom during the day though.

I love sleeping with my three boys. Although they wake me at six every day. Sometimes though the two younger ones squabble and I lock them in the bathroom

Doesn't seem to confuse them

mondaytosunday · 02/10/2022 10:16

My cats started waking me at 4.30am this past summer. That was it - I now lock them downstairs. They have a litter box and the tub of the kitchen/dining/livingroom. I recently installed a cat flap too.
Also my dogs sleep with me and that's crowded enough!
No more early wakings and they seem content enough (they have each other for company). They hear me get up at about 6.30-7am and start to meow so I go down to feed them and they have the run of the house then.

AltitudeCheck · 02/10/2022 10:19

If you get into a routine and stick to it she will adapt. If you're going to shut her out of your room at night feed her her biggest meal at bedtime and make sure she has somewhere cosy to sleep. Definitely helps if you can shut her downstairs to avoid her clawing at the bedroom door.

Our cats sleep with us. Cat snuggles are the main reason we have cats 😍 and the early alarm calls and occasional 3am zoomies are the price we pay!

Foxfeeder · 02/10/2022 10:21

Our cats are locked downstairs overnight where they can’t claw the carpet but they are allowed in the bedroom during the day so I don’t think it will confuse your cat.

Ours weren’t bad at waking us up to be fed but they did take up far more than their fair share of the bed.

crazeekat · 02/10/2022 10:25

I have 5 cats they all go outside so my house doesn't smell or anything, but......they all sleep on a bed at night, and all take turns where they fancy.
I have always let them on my bed. I find it really comforting to have them there and when one of them decide it's playtime at 3am they get chucked down the stairs hahaha x
But I totally get it that some people refuse to have them on their beds too, cats and dogs for that matter. WhT I would say I'd get a wee blanket for her if u decide to let her in, so she knows that's her spot and it's the best place for u xxx and love how u have took a rescue also, and like u say ur not sure what was going on before so that melts my heart u have her a home.

Allergictoironing · 02/10/2022 10:27

As long as you set a solid routine, she should be fine and not get confused. Even my Boycat, possibly the thickest cat in the world (even the vet refers to him as borderline special needs) knows my routines down pat e.g. work morning routine vs at home routine getting up.

Disappointed88 · 02/10/2022 10:30

Thanks for the answers everyone! She seems pretty smart so I thought she would get it but not had a cat before so wanted to see what other people thought. I know most people love sleeping with their cats but as much as I love her and having a cuddle in front of the TV I just don't want her in our bed!
Waiting to get a door fixed so we can shut her downstairs at night instead of just out of the bedroom which I think will help her feel more settled, I'm also hoping that when she is allowed out she might sleep better as although she has lots of toys and we play with her she is clearly frustrated at having to stay in.

My cats can open the doors so we have no choice!
