Can my cat sit on command?

We adopted an 8 yr old cat last year. She is a sweet angel and we all adore her.
I was just about to put her food bowl down and as a joke - like you might with a dog - I sternly said "sit!". And she did! I thought it was a funny coincidence. But since then she reliably does it every time I'm going to feed her. Can cats actually do this?

I can't quite decide if she's really sitting on command, or if she's just rather plump and defaults to sitting when she looks up at the food bowl I'm holding.

Yes - all three of mine can sit on command. One plays fetch and another will give his paw.

Basil wags his tail when you call his name.
Sybil will roll over when I say 'roll over' (but only if I think she is about to roll over.)
Lenny has a Latin O level, and Karl is a concert pianist

Aww I love all these.
There's a great programme on nexflix about cats at the moment.
My cats taught my dog to purr. He thinks he is a cat 😂

Mine are trained to sit. To come. Jump up and come for a whistle.

one catches the dreamies in his paws

it’s the dreamies !! They do anything for a dreamie

I trained our cat to sit (with Dreamies, of course) mainly because my DP said it wasn’t possible. He’s always had cats and I always had dogs before we adopted our lovely girl. I did it exactly like I would train a dog - she is very greedy and food motivated which helped.

My girl cat runs into the dining room at night (where we keep them at night) when we say "bedtime". The boy cat just squashes himself down and tries to play dead.

Dh wanted to train them to ding a bell for food but they were too old.

One of mine is ridiculously in tune with me. My oldest, I've had him 8 years. I can sense how he's feeling if something isn't right and he comes running to me if I'm ever upset for any reason. If he's not annoyed he will also sit on command, understands "Mummy is eating" so he doesn't jump up. Definitely knows his (unusual) name. He really is something else. My other 3 seem dimwitted in comparison. I wish every cat lover could have the experience I've had with this sweet boy of mine ❤️

@Spongeboob I had a cat like that once. She was extraordinary. I knew if the children were coming down with a cold or something because she'd start to fuss over them and sleep near them. When I was pregnant with my youngest she was protective of my bump, and when dd was born she became a little guard-cat. She was so intuitive and in tune with the family. She came to us as a young rescue in a dreadful state and once she recovered she just devoted herself to us. I was devastated when she died (far too young). I have never known a cat like her and doubt I ever will again. I miss her terribly, but feel so lucky to have known her.
