Feel like rehoming these cats due to fleas.

I can't deal with fleas anymore. I am not a dirty person I can't bare the thought of fleas being in my home around me or my children. I've ordered all indorex and flea treatment but im petrified it won't work.

The small cat has fleas so bad they are just walking all over her head, she's scratching every second of the day and it's just making me so angry and disgusted.
I know it's not their fault but I've had enough of this shit. They was treated in the vet and every thing was ok and ever since it's now got worse.

I am at the stage now where I want the cats gone. I have 2 and I know it's cruel but I can't deal with this. I'm due a baby in December and I need to get this shit sorted before they are born.

My husband is pissed off with me for feeling like this but it's draining. My house feels dirty and taken over and it's by cats? I just don't know what to do anymore. I'm more posting this to vent but I just can't deal with seeing it scratch itself one more time.
I tried to use a nit comb and try and remove a bulk of them off but it was just disgusting and they begun jumping every where. 😭😭

I get how miserable you are op. I had them a couple of times when I had cats and it really gets you down 😔 Could you get a company in to treat the house? I found that the best.

CatSeany · 30/09/2022 22:56

You can get tablet treatments that kill all of the fleas on the cat within 24 hours, then you just need to spray everywhere. I would get the cats properly treated and then think about rehoming via a charity. It really doesn't sound like you care very much about them. I've been frustrated with mine before but I've never spoken about him the way you do about yours. If you can't handle cats with fleas, you won't be able to handle cats without fleas alongside a baby.

GreyTCat · 30/09/2022 23:00

You really have to keep on top of the treatment and the house cleaning/products until they’re gone. It’s relentless while it’s happening, but if you keep it up they will go.

If you can’t manage the house yourself you can pay people to come and do it for you, but you’ll need to book in multiple sessions.

Don’t give up, it’s not fair on any of you, including the cats, to live with fleas.

MotherOfCatBoy · 30/09/2022 23:04

Appreciate it’s yucky. Don’t give up, you can deal with it! Others have given good advice. If you do what’s suggested here the problem should be gone soon, long before your baby arrives. Good luck!
(second what others have said about switching treatment if it’s not working).

StrayGoose · 30/09/2022 23:10

Credelo chewable from the vet. Works a treat!! Bad stuff ever. Honest. Please don't give up on your cats. And hoover carpets and crevices well.

Grrr typos!

Flea comb, a bowl filled with water and some washing up liquid squirted in, not mixed. Comb Cat dip flea comb in water to get the fleas off and keep repeating for as long as necessary. The washing up liquid pulls them to the bottom of the water so they can't jump back out. A bowl with water and washing up liquid and a light source over it will attract them over to it as well. My poor Cat had them for ages until they changed his flea jab from front line to something else. Continued brushing him until no more came off him and He's never had them since.

caringcarer · 30/09/2022 23:17

I have one short haired cat and one very fluffy long haired cat. Far easier to flea short haired one. You have to get treatment onto cats skin on back of head, not the fluffy hair. I part the fluffy hair to get to skin. Also sometimes cats become immune to same treatment so change to another one we switch between Frontline Plus and Advantage. Switching between the two seems to work best. Also after one of cats got a few fleas I treated them after 25 days and did not wait for 28 days. I mark it on calendar so I don't forget. Surely you can get a flea treatment and apply it yourself. Then another in about 24/5 days. Spray Indorex around skirtings and soft furnishings and get a flea smoke bomb put all animals put of room then set it off and go out for a few hours. Don't inhale it. They will kill all fleas. You can get them on Amazon for about £12. It is not hard to keep cats and dogs flea free. You just need to never forget, put it into calendar, to do it every 28 days. Don't punish the cats, by getting be rid of them, because you have been ineffective at treating them.

Rattysparklebum · 01/10/2022 00:01

I use Stronghold (get prescription from vet, then buy online) haven’t seen 1 flea in the year I’ve been using it, both my cats go outside and often bring in mice 🐁 so we’ve had problems in the past.

SwordToFlamethrower · 01/10/2022 00:09

Gosh OP, I could have written the same thing. I'm due late next month and I have grown to hate my cat. He has fleas too and the treatments aren't working.

Me and my husband are bitten to death and I actually had a panic attack the other day because I found a flea in my baby's cot. I was absolutely mortified! The cat isn't even allowed upstairs.

We vacuum every day, use flea shampoo, treatments etc, but it isn't working!

I'm having a baby in a few weeks and the thought of my precious baby being bitten by cat fleas is killing me.

My husband loves the cat but I despise him because all I see is filth and germs. Cat hair gets bloody everywhere no matter how obsessively I clean.

I've had cats before but this is totally unworkable for me.

Sympathies. Our mothering instincts just see these cats as a threat to our baby's safety.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 01/10/2022 06:42

Bravecto is the only thing I found works for fleas on the cats.

Indorex for the house.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 01/10/2022 06:44

Mothering instincts see these cats as a threat to your baby's safety? Are you mad?

Treat the cats with the correct medication and get your home treated too.

Don't bin your cats / pets because of some misplaced ire.

FlorrieFosdyke · 01/10/2022 06:50

In addition to advice above, we were told to keep on top of vacuuming the house. Our vet told us that fleas have a two week life cycle and most of the eggs and new fleas won't actually be on the cat but on the carpet and soft furnishings. They then jump on the cat when they need to feed.
You need to vacuum everywhere every week, paying attention not to miss anywhere (ie get in the corners and along skirting boards) to break the cycle. Then, if you have cats, make sure you vacuum at least every 10 days to ensure you stay on top of it and prevent new infestations.
This has really worked for us!

dilligaf78 · 01/10/2022 06:51

You need a flea treatment r such as Frontline Plus - it kills the eggs and helps break the life cycle of a flea - others will kill live fleas, but eggs hatch and the cycle starts again.
Indorex is the best if used correctly - I'm talking behind wardrobes, under sofas, even the seams of the curtains.
And comb, comb, comb! This will remove eggs from the cats - comb and bash the comb in a bowl of water and the fleas and eggs will come out. The fleas shouldn't be alive if they've been treated either.

You have pets and vacuum every 10 days?
No wonder people have fleas in their house with this kind of hygiene.
Im not a crazy clean freak who keeps everything sterile, but we have a dog and a cat and i cant imagine skipping vacuuming even for 1 day.

DorritLittle · 30/09/2022 22:13

Indorex and a flea collar or monthly treatment would definitely work. It's odd that it hasn't. You don't need to comb them out.

Please don't suggest flea collars. They're dangerous and only fit to cut up and put in the hoover bag.

It is hard to get on top of an infestation. It's. Intensive and needs to be kept on top of. You don't just treat and hope for the best.

From the sounds of it, you need to get someone in to spray the house and keep on top of the monthly spot ons for the cats. Vet stuff only, none of this over the counter crap. Fleas don't live on the animalse. They live and breed in the house.

LesserKnownKardashian · 01/10/2022 07:08

Speak to your vet again. I used to use prinocate but it stopped being effective. The vet changed the prescription to bravecto, which seems better.

I found smoke bombs effective for the house, but you need to leave them for a few hours, then it takes hours again to air the room.

dilligaf78 · 01/10/2022 07:14

Also, most councils do a pest control service.
I know our local council used to do a £50 flea infestation treated, with repeated visits until the problem is sorted.
But you need to treat those poor cats, comb and get it sorted

hellsbells99 · 01/10/2022 07:23

Our vet prescribed bravecto which lasts for 3 months when mine had them. Worked straight away. Plus indirect to spray the house and I washed all our bedding on a hot wash and the cat bedding

anotherdayanotherpathlesstravelled · 01/10/2022 07:38

Have to agree on the vacuuming - I used to vacuum every day as have 3 kids as well!

My vacuum broke a week ago - I have 4 cats. All got a vet proscribed flea treatment 2 weeks ago so up to date - in the last 3 days fleas have started to party so it's either the crap vet flea treatment or the significant drop in vacuuming

I used a ton of indorex on the house yesterday to just joking that will tide us over until the part I need for the vacuum arrives! (Bloody postal strike!)

My vet hasn't been able to get hold of stronghold in nearly a year he said!

I'm going to try getting some online as it's much better than the crap I got 2 weeks ago From the vet

Wallywobbles · 01/10/2022 07:55

Get a professional into deal.with the house.

GingerPigz · 01/10/2022 07:59

Bravecto is the only treatment that consistently works for us IF applied correctly (ie: it must make contact with the skin). Seresto flea collar is excellent in theory (it really works) but I wouldn't use with infants if they play with the cat. Also, if your cat is adventurous it could be quite dangerous as no quick release. Please note that it does take a while (sometimes months) for fleas to completely clear up after treatment due to the rapid flea egg cycle. Keep hoovering regularly (and empty the hoover outside immediately after use) and keep treating the cats monthly as well as washing their bedding. Also remember that they can still catch fleas after treatment but the treatment will quickly kill the fleas they catch.

Seventygoingunder · 30/09/2022 22:13

Why on earth did you get pets if you can’t/ won’t look after them properly? The way you talk about your poor cat, it’s not their fault that they are miserable and uncomfortable. Get a grip and sort it

That’s so rude

OP can change her mind at ANY point. It’s better she’s admitting she can’t cope surely ? And asking for advice.

OP I understand and in your position if you’ve tried everything you may want to explore rehoming. That doesn’t make you a bad person so ignore negative comments. You have a baby due soon which obviously is the priority alongside your mental health Flowers

summergone · 01/10/2022 08:06

Take them outside and comb them through with a nit comb ( prob a 2 person job ) have a bowl of water ready to quickly drown whatever fleas are on the comb . This will get rid of loads then use Advantage . They must be so uncomfortable please comb them out ASAP
