How much weight does your cat lose over the summer?

My 2 year old cat Cleo had her yearly check up at the vet yesterday. She has lost a lot of weight since her last weigh-in (can't remember exactly when that was. Either at the end of March 22 or in August 21). She used to be 4kg and she is now 3.5kg. So she has lost 500g which is a big proportion of her body weight. I know cats lose weight in summer, and she has been very active the last few months, but it seems like a lot. The vet said to keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't lose any more. Other than that she is very healthy and she eats well.

Mine loose a bit. But not that much. One of mine has lost 500g over about 8 months and feels like a bag of Bones. She's her normal self and bloods are normal. So hopefully it's only old age.

A fair bit, and he’s just started eating a lot(!) as he puts it back on for winter I think!

Thank you for the replies. Cleo is not all bones even though she's lost 500g. She is lean but the vet said her body condition is good. So I am hoping the weight loss is just due to her being more active in the summer. I was just wondering if it was usual for cats to lose that much in the summer.

Such a beautiful cat.

I've had cats for over 50 years and I've never known one lose that much weight in the summer. They do tend to look sleeker in the summer, expecially the ones who lose their really thick winter coats and only have a short fine summer one, but to lose that much is a concern.

Nathalie1975 · 27/09/2022 17:41

I will keep an eye on her now. The vet said to bring her back in a couple of months if she loses any more weight.

Mine don’t but their extra activities tend to yield lots of kills. I feed them the same all year round and they stay the same weight.

Mine usually just come in for two meals over the summer. Now the weather has turned they are on breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, lunch, after school snack, tea, supper and a little something to last overnight until the 5am wake up - all of which along with their punishing nap schedule means any weight that has come off, quickly goes back on.

Nothing. He was on a diet earlier in the year after a vet visit but he supplemented his diet with sparrows. I nickname him Chubster and when he rolls around in the dirt showing off his fat stomach he's Grubster Chubster.

Mine stay the same weight year-round.

🤣🤣
Sounds exhausting for them!
Ours barely come in at all to eat through the summer but have recently been coming in much more frequently to sleep and eat.

It's not unusual for a couple of my cats to lose about half a kg. They roam more in the summer and enjoy staying out hunting instead of coming home for food. My neighbours are very pleased as it keeps the mouse population down!

Nathalie1975 · 28/09/2022 13:42

@Poppins2016 Cleo is also a very good hunter but she brings live mice into the house and then loses them so we are not too happy about it ... last week she brought a live mouse on our bed at 6am. I had to wrap the mouse in the duvet and run to shake the duvet in the garden.
Good to know it is not just Cleo losing that much weight.

My poor Woody is like a string bean during the summer months, he's gawky/lanky anyway (unusual for a tabby?) but obviously has a high metabolism. He's just starting to fill out now and no longer resembles a half-starved street cat 🙄

His little 'brother' Kloppy however is moving from 'overweight' to obese 🙀
