Can you rename a rescue?

Hello!

We're about to adopt an 18 month old cat and just wondered if she would get used to a new name or should we stick with her name now?

Thanks!

DD and her partner adopted an enormous Maine Coon rescue cat, who had the ghastly and inappropriate name of Fifi, which neither of them could face shouting outside. They renamed her Maxie, and she has answered to it happily for the last five years.

In my experience, cats know damn well what their name is, but choose to ignore you anyway.

i doubt a name change would bother them, especially if treats were involved.

I didn't particularly like my two rescue girls names. But decided that as they were five, they would know them so I'd better keep them. Turned out their previous owner.( a kitten farmer) hadn't bothered to give them names. 😰 and the rescue had named them.
Cheddar on the other paw, suited her name and I love it.

Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute.

We re-named our rescue cat when she came to us when she was one. No problems.

Lindy2 · 27/09/2022 16:31

A good rescue centre will deal with the chip details being updated to show you as the new owner and they'll be likely yo ask you what name you want the cat registered as.

We stuck with the name Battersea had given our cat as it suited her. She was a stray so no one new her original name anyway.

Your new kitty looks lovely. I'm sure she will be very happy in her new home.

I like Wednesday too, but think since she is such a gorgeous svelte and elegant girl I would go with Morticia!

Tish.... Mon Cher.... [black_heart]

We had a troop of female black kittens to foster (fittingly) just before Halloween some years ago. I think we went with the girls from Despicable Me, Mavis from Hotel Transylvania and Lily (Munster).

Winterfellismyhome · 27/09/2022 17:24

@Lindy2 thank you. We got her from cats protection and the fosterer will update all her details 😁

I go through fleeting moments when I really start to worry my cats are deaf, such is their ignoring of their names being called! They are not in the least bit deaf when they hear a packet of ham being opened though...

Change the name. It's the tone it's said in more than the word. My cats have loads of different names from their real names anyway: Fatty Bum Bum, Sweetie Pie, Furry Shadow etc. They ignore or respond as and when they please!

Snozzlemaid · 27/09/2022 19:02

We renamed our rescue.
She was previously called Spider which none of us liked at all.
