What type of litter tray to stop my cat going just outside of the tray?

My cat has recently done a number 1 and a number 2 just outside of her litter tray, it must be by accident as the flap is missing but it's annoying and creates alot of mess!

I'm not sure if I should get the same type of litter tray again with the flap or thinking about getting one she has to jump in and out of.

Can you recommend a good litter tray?

Also share the links if possible :)

Top entry box. I have a very vigorous litter kicker and it reduces that too!

this one. It’s big, but plenty of room. Mine likes to perch on the side and her arse wouldn’t fit in so everything went over the side straight on the floor.

the ones with the lids apparently cats don’t like, as they need 360 vision to watch for predators. Mine have always preferred just the tray.

The bigger the better length wise. High sided are good for big kickers. One of those underbed plastic boxes are good for bigger cats but are bit shallow for ones that like to dig vigorouslyor spray wee up the wall.

Some cats don't mind the covered trays, some hate them. I've got one but took the flap off as the sound freaked cat out but is happy to use it so long as he can see out. There's no way he'd use a top entry, he won't even climb in cardboard boxes he can't see out of.

Also, some cats like having more then one tray to choose from, some even do wees in one & poo in the other!

Ours will only use wooden litter pellets, we have a covered tray with a flap. Unfortunately they are in short supply at the moment, can't get them in any supermarkets, pets at home staff said it was something to do with the dry weather as they are usually made from the off cuts from the timber industry and there's not been as much timber grown/cut this year. Who knows.
They're not available online or in store but you can buy the agriselect 30l bag for £8.99 (much cheaper than anywhere else) and click and collect from a pets at home shop if you have one locally

I used to have newspaper or a cheap wipeable rug under ours, it was a normal open one, but large. Tbf she never went out of the tray but it did stop most of the litter from tracking too far.

Just a thought here. How old is your cat? The older they are the less nimble/more arthritic they become and a tray they have to jump in from the top might put them off altogether

I ended up buying the biggest hooded tray that fitted the space I have. Removed the flap. It’s humongous and from pets at home. £25. Old lady can no get her fat arse completely inside easily.
