Why does he hate my rugs?

Looking for help with a cat who seems to have taken issue with any and all rugs.

We have had our cat since he was a kitten, he was fully litter trained when we got him and we have had him for some months now. However, he has recently taken issue with rugs. He has started urinating on any and all rugs, consistently. So far he he has urinated on the bath mat, the front door mat, the rug in my living room and both rugs in my daughters' bedrooms.

We have hardwood floors in some areas of the house so I don't want to get rid of all rugs entirely and whilst he has now been banned from my daughters rooms (much to their disappointment) I can't realistically ban him from the living room. He also manages to sneak into the bathroom when it is empty (the door is easy for him to push open as the latch isn't particularly stiff). We have solved the bathmat issue by having to pick it up and drape it over the side of the bath until someone bathes/showers but the living room rug is more of an issue. We have also had to get rid of the front door mat.

He doesnt urinate anywhere else (other than his litter box) and he is an indoor cat - not sure if that makes a difference). He doesnt poop outside of his litter tray and he also doesnt spray anywhere like walls or curtains etc. Its just the rugs.

I don't know how to stop it or why he is doing it. he is in good health generally.

The rugs are nice and soft for him to use. Try a softer litter than you are currently using, and perhaps scoop more frequently.
Our male indoor cat likes to pee in one tray, then come downstairs to poo in the other tray - you could try two trays as well.

Maybe take him to the vet - I know when our boy cat started peeing in strange places (and my sisters girl cat) it was because of a UTI or similar which needed treating. My boy had struvite crystals which can be serious in boy cats especially, my sisters cat had an infection.

My ginger cat Tom (RIP) hated my rugs too. He would poo on them and then roll them up so me or DS would come home to find a poo burrito waiting.
It was only rugs - in the end I had to get rid of the rugs.
He had a litter tray and a catflap but no, the rugs copped it.

He needs to see a vet for a check-up as it could be something like a UTI or crystals which can be fatal if left unchecked.

However it could also be as simple as he likes the soft surfaces!
