Vets or wait a while?

Yesterday my 2 year old cat was out fighting other cats. When he came in for dinner his fur was ruffled up, he was moving gingerly and he didn't eat his dinner. I can't see any wounds but he seemed a bit battered and bruised. I gave him a dose of metacam and he slept most of the evening.

This morning he looks so miserable, just not himself and not eating. Should I get him to the vets today or leave it a bit longer?

He was there literally 2 weeks ago with a bite on his leg!

I would take him to the vet. If he has an abscess then they can get very nasty (and very expensive) very quickly.

I agree with Grumpy. My rescued street lad was forever fighting or running away from them, and he had so many abscesses forming. The vet said the lethargy and not being himself could be a fever brewing. He had so many that I used to manage them at home, with the advice from the vet each time over the phone!
Is your cat neutered?
Good luck hope he's ok.

Sorry, forgot to add that you can't always see or feel the wound from a cat bite. The small holes quickly close up, trapping the infection inside. The first physical signs I always noticed was a bald patch and swelling.

Take him today. If he’s not eaten since the fight he’s not feeling well

Sprig1 · 15/09/2022 12:20

Vets, definitely. You don't want infection to set in.

We've found a bite on his tummy, and booking vets now. He is neutered but he's been scrapping alot since his sister died last month. We've got feliway plug ins etc but seems he's still being bolshy out there!
New kitten joined us on Monday so hopefully that helps chill him out in the long run (I hope!)

That's a good idea to take him. Hope he's ok

Hope your wee warrior gets on ok at the vet. I had a rescue who would fight the devil and come back for more, I was never away from the vets with her.

I know it's against the prevailing advice but in 50+ years of having cats have never taken one to the vets for fight related wounds - both neutered and in the past unneutered toms.

They always get better in a few days even with quite bad infected wounds.

Tuxedokitty · 15/09/2022 18:19

We're back from the vets, they couldn't find the wound, and nor could we, typically! He does have a fever though, so yet another bill for antibiotics and painkillers!

Gratuitous pic of the demon attached, literally minutes after paying a big vets bill for a limp that disappeared as soon as we paid, plus new little kitten for good measure.
