Hesitant but the idea of an older cat really appeals. Concerned of potential large vet bills at a time of rocketing cost of living.

The first cat I had as an adult was 19 when I got her, along with her heart meds. Her elderly owner had passed away, and due to allergies her granddaughter couldn't home her. She worked for the same company I did and put out a plea on the work email (as it was this or PTS) and I contacted her and said I'd give the cat a home.

Tammy was a thin but beautiful tortie, friendly enough but not a snuggly cat, so we lived side by side for 9 months. One day I passed by the spare room door and saw her asleep in her usual sunlit spot, then I realised she was very still and had died.

Was definitely worth it.

The other option was sending him away for three weeks to be made radioactive @purpleme12, and we thought that might make him feel sad and abandoned.

I was actually going to do this. Paid the deposit and everything. I thought you know pain for long term gain and everything. But then they were 50/50 about whether it would be a good thing for him or not so in the end I decided not to go ahead. I probably could have gone ahead with it after all as he was healthy anyway it appears but we had 50/50 decision to make. So he's on thyronorm now!

My Dcat was in for less than a week, they let me take her home early as she was 19 and she was just so good. I got updates everyday.

We had a niggling worry that what if he died while he was sent away as well as worrying that he'd be sad @purpleme12.

That sounds great @Bestcatmum, a week is not nearly so bad.

Like many cat owners we're not always sure what to do for the best but we don't mind the Thyronorm routine and neither does he.

I adopted Bob at 10, he was the most wonderful, loving, gentle friend you could wish for. I’ve had 7 cats over 30 years. He was by far my favourite. Most cats get old and you have some vets fees but generally he didn’t cost me much, and he had a heart murmur all his life which cost me nothing. Just vitamin B injections in his later years.

he died peacefully age 24.

@Cervinia 24! Gulp.
