Adopting kitten

Hi there I'm thinking of adopting a kitten from the rspca purely because they need homes. I would get an older cat but I have an 8yr old cat already. She has lived on her own (no other cats) since 10 weeks old. Is this a bad idea? Any things to consider?

Those kittens willl be snapped up , it's the older ones that languish (especially black cats )

How would your Resisdent Cat cope with an interloper ?

I know my female cat would be as judgey as heck , male cat would hide !

I'm going to fill in the form and ask for a younger cat. I don't think she would tolerate an older one. If they're snapped up it's fine. I just want to help. She doesn't like many of the neighbourhood cats. Occasionally she has sat in the garden with one but one particular one comes round who she hates and growls at. He did jump on her once though.

Very in favour of rescue cats! But whether your cat is ok with it is likely to depend on your cat's nature. A cat thats even just slightly older than the kitten stage might be safer. My cats are only a year or so apart but it was still quite notable the kitten wanted to play much more than the older cats and would just jump on them if they didn't oblige! Luckily they are very chilled cats but if the elder cat wasn't so chilled it might make for difficult times.

That's interesting as a very young cat might annoy her as well. How did you know?

Also - if you have any issues getting a cat from RSPCA (whether due to not meeting criteria or because they have so many applicants) strongly suggest checking out a smaller rescue. I had no response from SSPCA or Cats Protection but once I got in touch with a smaller rescue got my cats a couple weeks later.

My cats had met my mum's cats, and I also took my friend's cat for a couple weeks whilst she was on holiday, so I knew they were quite chill with other cats. In contrast, my mum's cats were really not a fan of having kittens around and were obviously stressed.

My 12 year old cat avoided the kitten and hissed for ages. Months. But now they are really silly together. Playing chase round the house and charging all over the place.

Thanks they're both helpful comments

If she’s not a social cat I wouldn’t risk it.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/09/2022 22:21

It's hard to tell. Other cats have come in garden before and she would sit with them but there's just one she doesn't seem to like

I've seen one who is about two and apparently he gets on with everyone. He looks like a lovely boy. Not sure whether to just go for it
