Kitten food

I have two 16 week old kittens who are now turning up the food they were weaned on (whiskas fish in jelly).
I’ve tried them with whiskas poultry in jelly which they don’t eat either.
One of them will eat iams chicken in gravy and both will eat the whiskas kitten food but I’m worried they aren’t eating enough.
Does anyone have recommendations for a kitten food I can get quickly that isn’t too expensive as I’ve already wasted a lot of food?
seeing the vet in a couple of weeks for their second vaccinations so will ask for advice then too.

I have Tesco, Lidl and a pets at home near me if that helps with recommendations on fussy kitten food 😁

I used to feed my 9mo kitten the iams chicken in gravy that he was weaned kn but then made the mistake of getting a free trial of the fancy 'untamed' tins. He now won't touch the iams so he's on a small can of the untamed a day and dry food ☹️ Fussy little things aren't they?!

When I had kittens they mucked me about like this and I went through sooo many foods as I worried they weren't eating enough and they are so small and cute

Eventually, when they were eating more expensive food than me, I cottoned on, went on strike and left them to eat or starve. They were eating enough - they were growing, had loads of energy, they just had me wrapped round their little paws.

Took about 2 days of protest but after that, they would eat anything.

Fine for them to have a preference eg licking off jelly and ignoring chunks, won't eat one flavour in any food, but swapping from food to food I drew the line.

For an actual food recommendation I fed Feringa Kitten and had it delivered by Zooplus. As it's a traditional pate type food it also stopped all the fussing about jelly/chunks/gravy etc.

Thank you both for sharing your experiences, it’s nice to know I’m not alone!
Pate type food sounds good as the one that does eat the iams licks the gravy off first and then eats the rest when she realises I’m not going to give them anymore!

If they’ll eat whiskas kitten feed them that, they need kitten food till a year.

Elephanttrunk · 11/09/2022 22:04

@Fluffycloudland77 They will only eat the whiskas kitten dry food, not the wet so I’m worried they aren’t getting enough. At least one of them eats the iams wet so I’ll stick to that alongside the whiskas dry for a week and see how we go

Pets at home have their own brand called Seriously Good Bistro that is honestly like kitten crack, it's grain free and extremely healthy and by all accounts extremely delicious. Both the pouches and tins are excellent but the pouches are eternally out of stock online - if your local store has some, grab them!

Elephanttrunk · 12/09/2022 08:24

@unvillage thank you for the recommendation, I will head over there today and hope that this last attempt at changing food will work 🤣

If they like dry I would look at a better quality dry with a higher meat content like applaws or lily's kitchen. Both are much more expensive than whiskers dry but will be much better for the little ones and fill them up more.
If you go to pets at home look at the ingredients of the dry food as there might be an own brand.
My cat loves purizon dry cat food but I buy it from zooplus online so won't help you today.

AnnaMagnani · 12/09/2022 08:47

If you switch to a higher quality food, watch how much you feed them.

It's a lot less per cat as there is less filler.

I've always managed to have one cat who can self-regulate how much they need to eat, and one who doesn't understand 'enough' and is determined to be a fat bastard.

I have a few different varieties on the go and rotate as they get bored.
Don't feed your cats with dog food. It's too low in protein and will make your cats ill in along run. Cats need a higher proportion of protein than dogs in their food.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/09/2022 11:38

It’s not an opinion, it’s fact that cats can’t have dog food. They have different needs nutritionally.

Elephanttrunk · 12/09/2022 15:36

Don’t worry I wasn’t planning on getting them dog food 😊
Ordered Lily’s kitchen complete dry food and will pray they both eat it!
