Considering adoption

My DD had been asking to get a pet for ages but I wanted to wait until she was older. We both love cats and now she’s almost 10 and pretty responsible for her age i feel she is ready to help with the responsibility of caring for a pet and the time is right to start looking at adoption.

we live in a ground floor flat so it would be an indoor home and the rescue centre we are looking at insist on that anyway so that should be ok.

I’m out at work 8-5 Monday to Friday so I’m thinking maybe 2 cats might be better so they can keep each other company?

I’d appreciate any advice from more experienced cat owners about age/sex of cat/cats I should think about. The rescue centre currently have a pair of adorable male kittens that will be ready for adoption in 4 weeks when they are 10 weeks old that they could consider us for.

My brother and his teens have two female cats ( Both spayed) they get on fine.
Burmese, so are quite dog like.
(They retrieve &c)
Be guided by the rescue- they will know the cats and the type of home needed.
I initially thought you meant human adoption!

oakleaffy · 11/09/2022 17:51

Edit: Kittens sound ideal- They will probably be far more playful than a feral older cat. Can’t see any problems as long as their litter trays are separated- some cats hate sharing a litter tray.

MojoJojo71 · 11/09/2022 17:59

Lol sorry I should have been more specific @oakleaffy i guess I thought because I’m posting in the litter tray I didn’t need to say. I certainly don’t need any more DC and DD is definitely a keeper

Kittens are really hard work, I'd look for slightly older cats. It might not be ideal to be out at work all day with kittens. A lot of rescues don't rehome kittens to people who are out all day. I think you'd be better looking for a pair of bonded, slightly older cats. I have owned a lot of cats and wouldn't want to go through the kitten stage again.

Yarnosaur · 11/09/2022 18:34

I would also go for an adult cat or bonded pair. They are so much easier than kittens!

We adopted an older cat and she’s ace! She was 11 when we got her and she’s been a dream - perfectly house trained, very gentle and content just to sleep all day if she’s alone.

We weren’t told that she was a house cat but she’s happy to stay indoors or snooze in the garden if the patio doors are open and it’s a sunny day. I’m not sure she’d be able to clear the fences now but she’s never shown any inclination to venture any further than our back garden. On the odd occasion that she’s headed out of the front door, she’s ran back in pretty quick. We love her very much - so lucky to have her 😍

I’ve looked on more local rescue sites and spotted a pair of beautiful 1 year old tabby sisters who have always been indoor cats. I think you are right, little kittens will be too much, especially if I have to leave them to go to work. I’m going to give them a call tomorrow and see if they are still available.

Definitely go for adult cats. So many are overlooked in favour of kittens. They have so much to give.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/09/2022 21:13

Our girl was 10/11 when we got her (owner wasn’t sure so she’s 11/12 now) and she’s great. She eats and sleeps and sometimes plays. Chases moths and is scared of house flies. Loves fuss.

I’d have a kitten again but I had a Bengal kitten and you need to raise bengals from kittens.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/09/2022 08:42

Let us know how you get on!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/09/2022 11:55

Going against the grain here. I dpn't think two kittens are difficult at all. They keep each other amused and are generally a joy to have. I've been down this route 4 times now and never had any issues.
A bigger problem though might be the lack of outside access. My latest two kittens were escape artists from about three months old, and couldn't wait to get free access outside. On that basis you might be better going for a pair of known 'inside' cats.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/09/2022 17:00

We tried to make our first two chinchilla Persian kittens indoor only and it didn’t work so they went out.

Its ok if the cats ok with being indoor only.

DreamingofItaly2023 · 12/09/2022 17:03

I would definitely recommend adult cats as the rescue will know their personalities so can match you really well. Kittens are cute but exhausting and can be very scratchy to begin with so not great for a child who hasn’t had cats before.

we got two girls when they were two years old and we couldn’t ask for lovelier, more affectionate cats.

Allergictoironing · 12/09/2022 18:44

Important tip if you're wanting indoor only cats - look up Flatcats . Window meshes that have kept my 2 large adult cats indoors, let the breeze through when you open the windows, and as a bonus keep most insects out. Lifesavers this summer with the heat.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/09/2022 18:57

YY to adult cats .
Ours were 1 yo when we got them (brother and sister)
They were rescued from a garden and would've been kept indoors in Rescue
When we got them (and got a microchip catdoor) they were so keen to go out !
We waited about 8 weeks till we felt they were ready and confident that our house was home and they wanted to come back.

There are loads of cats that are indoor and specift 'only pet' so quite happy to amuse themselves and sleep .

Thought I’d update you and share some photos. I know the litter tray loves photos! We’ve applied to adopt these gorgeous creatures, just waiting for house to be checked and for neutering/chipping etc and then we’ll hopefully bring them home in a couple of weeks. Luna is the black and white one, she’s about a year old and the black one is Shadow who is Luna’s son and is about 4 months old.

They are beautiful!

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 27/09/2022 12:10

Oh they're gorgeous.

I adopted a pair in May, a 1 year old and a 4 year old. They are amazing. Ashycat 1 (the 4 year old) has a strong mother instinct and takes care of Ashycat2 (she brought her a mouse last week). Over the summer, they were in and out all the time, total Star Trek cats (boldly going where no kit has gone before. Now the weather is colder, they are more "are you going to use all of that pillow?"

Pardon the blurry pic, but this is what I woke up to this morning. Ashycat1 is at the back, Ashycat2 is at the front, stretched out across me. that's her back paw, she doesn't have stilts.
