Wound interference despite cone... any tips to prevent? DIY vest?

As the title says... my poor cat has a nasty wound on her abdomen (has been seen by the vet, treated appropriately) and is wearing a cone to prevent wound interference. Unfortunately this isn't quite working as she can still get to part of it and I'm concerned that she'll prevent healing and/or rip the stitches out.

I'm considering making some sort of DIY vest (using a baby vest as a base) to cover the wound up, has anyone done this successfully?

Any other tips? Thanks!

Bigger cone needed and ask vets for a medical pet shirt that will fit correctly and be secure.

You can get special vests from the vets. My parents cat looked hilarious in his ad it stuck to all his spare tyres!

Re the vest - the vet is closed due to the bank holiday! We have a post op check tomorrow, so I'll ask about one then... I have attempted to DIY, but it hasn't worked and I don't want to hurt her by trying multiple attempts, as she's clearly very sore.

I have, however, managed to find a larger cone, through virtue of having a bigger cat who is always getting into scrapes... I'd forgotten that I kept a couple for emergencies (thank goodness I did, but typical I forgot about doing so 🙄)! My poor little girl looks ridiculous now, but hopefully it'll stop her from messing with her stitches which is the important thing. I'm not sure I'm going to be forgiven any time soon, I think she wants to murder me!

You could use a baby grow

Poppins2016 · 29/08/2022 12:35

That's actually what I tried (with arms/legs cut off and poppers left open around the tail/bottom)! 0-3 months was too small and 3-6 was too big and bunched up around her legs so she got stuck and couldn't walk... After that I gave up as she wasn't enjoying being handled and clearly wanted to be left alone. She's very sore, poor thing... probably worse now because she's been interfering with the wound. The bigger collar seems to be working, though...

Our cats managed to wriggle out of their medical vests within a few hours after spaying. I resorted to elastic tubular bandages cut to size with leg holes. Worked really well.
