Oesophageal tube feeding

Our 13 year old cat Sid has liver problems and was in vets for almost a week, fed by nasogastric tube. We are awaiting a bile acid test result. He now has oesophageal tube in situ so we can feed him at home (discharged yesterday). He is supposed to have 1 and a bit tins of Hills Urgent Care prescription food now he's home, mixed with water first then syringed in via tube. He was fed all liquid at vets and by us yesterday, which was fairly easy.

The tinned food, even mixed with water as advised, is not easy to administer and I'm so worried about him not having enough nutrition and me clogging up the tube. Please, has anyone experience of this? He's not interested in feeding himself at the moment.

He's not too bad in himself and is due for check up Tuesday. I'm worrying myself sickover this.

I’m feeding a human using a tube and we only use enteral feed or milk or it would clog.

I honestly can’t see how they expect you to feed in this way using food? Do you have liquid feed too.

It did clog despite watering down considerably! Have phoned vet and luckily she hadn't left for weekend so husband gone to pick up some more liquid food. Thank you.

I can imagine gourmet pate food working but the amount of water you’d need to make it work would be considerable.

I had to feed my cat with one. And I also tube feed babies at work. You can only put liquid down the tubes. You would need to blitz any solid food with extra water or formula in a blinder and make sure it's completely lump free to put it down a tube.

For blocked tubes in kids we put full fat coke or pineapple juice down them. It's something to do with the acid in it.

We’ve been told to use warm water and bi carbonate of soda solution.

Cats would DEMAND branded cola only. No store brand please.

The vet suggested we gently blew air into the feeding tube using syringe. This worked and we then used warm water before and after. We did get into a routine but sadly Sidney deteriorated and was pts on Tuesday. I wish we'd never started it tbh.

Sorry to hear of your loss, OP, and what a sad update. RIP lovely Sid 💐

I’m so sorry, it doesn’t matter how you lose them you have regrets. You did what you thought best at the time so don’t beat yourself up.
