Older diabetic cat, inappropriate pissing

Cat is 13, diagnosed with diabetes last December, but we can’t get it under control. He’s had two attacks of pancreatitis but current seems okay (he stops eating and is very lethargic when he has an attack).

But - he’s taken to pissing in inappropriate places. Not always so I don’t think it’s dementia or any uncontrollable need to go. He’ll use the litter tray, or go out, but not entirely reliably. He has a fondness for a corner of the spare bed, plus when we stripped it and hadn’t got round to remaking it, he weed on the pile of clean bedding. He’s also done it on clothes left on the floor, and just now in a bag of clean washing.

Any ideas? We need to do a glucose curve over the weekend and will mention it to the vet when we report that back to them.

UTI?

Not impossible, and the vet will no doubt check. It seems very deliberate though, he spends most of his time downstairs but comes upstairs to pee in places he shouldn’t.

We so now have a second tray upstairs, but he’s not discovered it yet. I should say he’s also had a little disruption as we’ve been away, but the problem predates that (and the cat sitter took excellent care of him).

I can't ever leave piles of washing on the floor or beds unmade for this reason!

A UTI or crystals, maybe.

HappyHamsters · 19/08/2022 12:14

You need to keep all,the upstairs doors shut except for the room where you can put his second tray, which room is it in.

Agreed, we’re trying! The complication is he’s not used that litter tray yet, we’ll have to encourage him. Also his brother likes to hang out in or bedroom or the spare, so we’re either shutting HIM out, or leaving the door open if he’s already there. The spare room is open now for that reason, fortunately pissy cat is downstairs being a trip hazard.

You can put some used litter in the new tray to encourage him, do they have separate trays. I wonder if its a tray, dominance or territorial issue if he has a brother cat

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/08/2022 15:08

Which litter are you using? Big or rough ones can put them off.

DontCallMeBaby · 19/08/2022 18:30

It’s Cat’s Best litter, and he uses it downstairs. His brother doesn’t use either tray, he clearly considers it beneath him.

weeing in inappropriate places is often stress cystitis. My cat is currently having this and has weed on the sofa and on my bed right beside me!

DontCallMeBaby · 19/08/2022 21:02

We were away for just over a week with a cat sitter coming in, that could have caused him some stress. I thought he was pretty happy, we could see him on camera waiting for his new best friend to feed him, and he got plenty of fuss.

That could be it, I’d also been away for a week and left dh in charge! Don’t think cat approved. 😆

QuebecBagnet · 19/08/2022 21:07

The vet prescribed some pain killers and also some cystitis supplement (think you can get this last one on without a prescription on Amazon). Also got a feliway plug in and loads of fuss and dreamies.
