Is there anything I can do or is this the end?

My VERY old cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure after being visibly unwell for few days last week.

He was put on IV for two days and had some meds. The vet believes it’s too early to think about PTS, but he said it’s not often they see cats that old so it’s hard to say how long before he deteriorates again.

This whole ordeal costed us about £600.

He came home Saturday and was eating loads, drinking, was somewhat friendly with us like he used to, but kept to himself for the majority of the day.

This morning though he didn’t want to eat, I mange to get him to have about 1/4 of pouch. He spent majority of the morning sat in the garden in a hunched position. In those moments he looks so miserable, maybe not in pain but not feeling 100%. I hate to think he’s suffering and there’s nothing I can do.

But then he gets a bit better, comes over to me for some attention, purrs etc. At times he seems like his old self, cleaning himself, asking for attention, and then I can’t imagine taking him to the vet to be PTS. He’s my first cat, and we only adopted him 2 years ago. I don’t know what behaviours are due to his illness and what is the result of his age?

When I rang vet this morning after panicking he didn’t eat, they said to bring him in if I suspect he’s in pain. But then I know he hates the vet trip, and they probably will want to repeat his bloods etc. If I had unlimited budget then I would take him in each time I think somethings wrong, but I can’t afford another £400-500. Anyhow, the vet said the results wouldn’t change the management of his illness (renal diet and “wait and see”).

I know he’s old and I don’t want to prolong his life, just want him to be comfortable …

Should I try the renal fluid injections? Can anyone share their experience with doing this to very old cats?

I hate my cat PTS as soon S she was diagnosed with Kidney failure. She also had heat disease. I just looked at her and knew it was time. I don't think I'd actively treat advanced kidney failure.

It sounds like he's miserable and he must feel terrible.

If you are thinking like this, I think you know it's time. You know your lovely cat best. I'm so sorry, I've been through it and it's so so hard Flowers

It's not about the money. It's about letting your dear cat go gently.

I'm really sorry OP but I'd be very seriously considering PTS on the basis of what you've posted. He really doesn't sound happy, and you know him better than your vet. Been there with one of my previous cats.
I lnow this a bit of a cliche, but I firmly believe that 'better a day too early than a day too late' applies.
You have my sympathy 💐

I’m just so heartbroken , I cry everyday over this.

2 weeks ago he was himself, but the heatwave must’ve really aggravated his symptoms.

The vet also said that he’s got one tooth that could potentially cause some discomfort so I keep thinking maybe if we take the tooth out and put him on fluids he’d be ok? 💔😔

Be aware that dealing with the tooth could well require surgery - in which case the vet might well refuse to try as surgery is a massive strain on a frail old body. We had exactly this scenario with an elderly cat. It was hard but we had to let her go.

It's always hard. Sorry dcat is struggling, he sounds to have found a wonderful loving owner💐

It's dreadful but you will know when it is the right time . I'd probably advise no more intervention but have few last days then prepare yourself . My cat was nearly 20 and we'd had her from a kitten but I got to hold her and let her go peacefully. Was awful but I'd spent the week before thinking I'd just wake up and find her. 18 months later my current cat came into our lives needing a home he is wonderful and you do heal.
I'm sorry it's hard x

I would not have the tooth removed. It will require a GA. And I doubt the vet would be happy to do it. It really does sound like it's time.
