Is this a UTI?

8 year old cat suddenly miaowed intensely and I went to see what was up and she was crouched in the study, weeing. At first I shrieked and clapped to shift her but she didn't move so I thought 'hmm' and let her continue (hardwood floor too!) - she has a litter tray which she never uses and all doors were open. She has never weed where she shouldn't

She finished and it was just a few drops of wee but when I cleaned it up, there was jelly like blood but only a little

There's been some licking of her bits and pieces for a while now and then she stretched out in the sun and is sleeping

The thing is, she is terrified of the vet. Last took her 3 years ago and she weed and pood in the carrier and yowled and cried and was very distressed

Is this something that could resolve in a few days? I'll book her in for tomorrow of course , would not leave her in pain but thought I'd ask

Your cat is in pain. Having blood in the wee is a bad sign. Any chance she's pregnant? Either way, you really ought to get her seen at an emergency vet TODAY.

Had cats for 42 years

No, she's spayed. Currently not in pain .. lying in the sun sleeping after eating a pouch

I think you need to ring the vet and check with the nurse it’s not urgent. There will be someone there. Mine had frequent uti and they don’t go off food or show signs of pain with them.

Sounds like a UTI to me and yes, she will be in pain. Cats mask pain very well. Try to get her seen today. Failing that, then first thing tomorrow.

HardRockOwl · 14/08/2022 17:31

Gave them a call and they feel it can wait until tomorrow, given that she has eaten again, drank, had a ten minute brush (her favourite) and is now sleeping and seems pretty peaceful to me

She will be there first thing though of course. I can only think it must be the heat

Cats do not behave like that due to the heat.

HardRockOwl · 14/08/2022 18:31

@Toddlerteaplease who knows why it's happened? I'm merely guessing as she's never been unwell in all her 8 years

That's either a UTI or crystals - tbh I'm really surprised the vets were happy to leave her until tomorrow Shock

HardRockOwl · 14/08/2022 22:04

Perfectly happy to leave her. And she's absolutely fine in herself. Currently chasing a moth.

Took her to the vets. She's absolutely fine as suspected 😏

No signs of a UTI, vet doesn't prescribe antibiotics for UTIs anyway these days - so we have metacam for any potential pain.

Vet agreed could be the start of it or could be just a one off. She's weeing completely normally today anyway

86 quid. Worth it for the peace of mind but I think I'll listen to my instincts should there be a next time!

In female cats 98% of these signs are not a bacterial infection, but sterile cystitis either cause by stress or very concentrated urine. The most common treatments are anti-inflammatories, l-tryptophan and increasing fluid intake. Urgent, but not an emergency so okay to wait 24 hours. Male cats it's very different due to their poor design,
