Sodding cat harnesses

I understand that some people, who no doubt have very placid cats, and who have spent time getting them used to the things, and who don't take them further than the garden, can find them useful.

But ...

This week alone we have had three cases of harnesses causing serious harm. The first - someone decided to take their cat for a walk in the park. The cat got spooked, flung itself around, broke free of the harness and promptly disappeared down some sort of fox hole. We've been staking out the park, we've had motion activated, night vision cameras down the hole, and nothing. It's been a week now. The cat is nowhere to be found.

The second - a man had a female cat in a flat. Unneutered due to the terrible shortage of vets in London, he was on the waiting list for her to be done. Pets at Home had some sort of promotion/event thing about indoor cats, and how all cats needed to have outdoor access, and here are some harnesses etc etc. So he was persuaded. He put her in one, took her outside and, just like many cats do, she totally freaked out and managed to escape the harness. One of our rescue workers had to spend 9 hours in full sun in sky high temperatures yesterday trying to trap her, after the owner had been unsuccessful in getting her back for around 10 days. She was caught, but could very easily not have been.

Third one - similar story to the second. This time a male and still missing.

Previously we've had calls where the same thing has happened - at a motorway services!

Harnesses are not safe. Most cats hate them. Think very, very carefully before using them.

I can't imagine putting a cat in a harness

Never used one - visions of my arms scratched to pieces and cats stuck to the ceiling. Mine won't even tolerate collars. Mysteriously 'lose' them if I put them on. They are microchipped, though. My boy is very shy and hates being confined. I do know a couple of people who use them on pedigrees, but my moggies are too spirited. think they only have a chance of success if you start using them really young, and your cat is placid.

Ddog, on the other hand, loved his because it meant a car journey to a more exciting than usual walk! It's been two years now since he died, and we still keep it in a bag in the utility room - can't bear to throw it away Sad

What was that deleted post? I'm sure I read it and it was innocuous. Yes of course, dogs and harnesses - fair enough. Cats are a completely different kettle of fish.

We know a woman who walks her cat in a cat transporter to the park and lets her climb a tree with a long lead and harness. It’s a nightmare as dogs come and bark at the cat which must be distressing for her.

That said I’ve had at least one harness rejected by cats that our dog has appraised.

Harnesses or they don't leave the house or secure garden. Cats are monsters to wildlife.

I think this is part and parcel of naive pet ownership which has grown since the pandemic. Some people treat the animals as toys, or something to Instagram, and do not consider whether the animal is the right fit for them.

Plenty of cats are happy indoor (or need to be due to FIV or amputation or sight issues etc) so if you don't have suitable outside space get one of those.

If you are going to attempt a harness/taking a cat out into the world you need to do so very very carefully, gradually getting them used to it, ideally whilst young too. They are not dogs.

My cat will take a harness no problem but I wouldn't dream of walking him in the streets.

Yes I think that's what's going on. I mean we've always had the occasional call out relating to harness use gone wrong, but this year seems to be off the scale.

I know someone who walks her Savannah cats in a harness. She takes them into shops and up the fells - the cats love it but they're also proper secure dog-harnesses, not the tiny flimsy cat ones you can buy.

I don't think harnesses are the issue - it's irresponsible pet owners that are the problem.

Amrapaali · 14/08/2022 07:16

Agree with PP- irresponsible pet owners who don't have an iota of common sense.

Mine is used to a harness but only in our garden. I wouldnt dare take her out on the streets.

And so called "escape proof" harnesses are nothing of the kind. Cats are basically liquid and can wriggle out of almost any constraint. Learnt that the hard way a couple of times.

Thankfully she knew enough to come running back to the kitchen door when spooked. But it could have gone so wrong and she could have dashed out on to our busy road.

While I enjoy watching animal rescue videos on the Dodo site, I think it has a lot to answer for on this. Lots of videos of cats going on van life 'adventures' in backpacks or on motorbikes or climbing mountains or 'enjoying' the beach with harnesses on. Another irritating insta trend for the benefit of the owner not the cat.
