Letting cat out at night

Up until very recently, our cat has been a house cat, but we've started letting her out and she only potters around the garden so I feel a lot more confident with her going out.
Every morning we come into the room she sleeps in and she's weed it's doing my head in and she's using all corners of the room now, there's no escape and the house smells now. I'm thinking of getting a catflap, so she can go out at night, I I don't have to leave the kitchen window open then!
Does your cat go out at night. Do they use a catflap. Do you think this might help with the wee situation. Does your cat stay out all night or do they pop in and out??

I've always had cats (the past 42 years), and always let them out during the DAY. I've never had a cat flap. In this weather, I leave the back door open (I've only got 1 cat now) and he comes and goes as he likes. He's fed wet food 3 or 4 times a day, around about the same times each day. His last pouch of food is at about 10pm. He eats a bit then goes out for 30mins or so, and comes in. Every cat I've ever had has stayed in all night.

The routine has always been the same for every cat I've ever had (I had 3 for about 7 years). I leave a litter tray down at all times. Not one of my cats has ever made a mess in the house, ever.

Does she have access to a litter tray? If so and shes still doing this it could well be shes stressed being kept in now shes had a taste for it! I've got a sure flap that only opens for my cats, I still have to leave the window open mind as one is to dumb to understand it!! Mine roam as they please and are very happy!! Do it if shes safe!

My cat stays in at night, he has never been out at night. He has a cat flap that we lock after he has had dinner at about 9. He has a tray but rarely uses it, he goes in the garden during the day (mine, not the neighbours before anyone goes off on one!) and usually lasts all night until he goes out the next morning.

Our cat goes out when he wants and has a micro chip cat flap. That's because he was half feral when he came to us so he needs to come and go as he pleases or gets stressed.

He usually goes out in the summer but in the winter he barely moves off the sofa.

Does your cat usually use the litter tray, I'd go to the vet if this is a new problem?

LivingForPinkGin · 02/08/2022 16:13

We have a flap for our cat that only opens for his microchip and he lets himself in and out whenever he wants.
He was waking us up around 3 every morning to be let out before we got the flap. He is so much happier now that he can let himself in and out as he pleases.

PeacheyPeach · 02/08/2022 23:47

She does have a litter tray but only poos in it. She just keeps finding new corners in the house to wee in. I can't bear it as it stinks and she ruined the flooring as its gone underneath the flooring we have down. The vet has said we should let her out, but I don't think she has got the message that she can wee outside yet!
Really hope that a microchip catflap will help this situation

My goes out day and night, she would be climbing the walls if I locked her in all night

Mueslikid · 03/08/2022 19:23

Have you tried a second litter tray?

Our cats go out between breakfast and teatime, never at night, and they are happy with their routine.

Young cat has 2 litter trays, and will religiously only ever wee in one and only ever poo in the other. Goes outside too, but the litter trays get regular use.

Old cat only uses her own single litter tray for both, but tends to always go outside, I hardly ever need to clean it.

PeacheyPeach · 04/08/2022 00:44

Hiya I'm thinking about a second tray to see if she wants to use that for her wees x

Ideally "single" cats should have access to two litter trays - one for wee and one for poo as they often don't like doing both in the same space.

However if it's just wee she's having issues with, she could have a UTI so it may be worth getting her to the vets.

something2say · 04/08/2022 07:31

You're all so lucky to have cats. Mine was killed on 31st May and I miss him x

Basilthymerosemary · 04/08/2022 08:17

She will figure it out pretty quickly in regards to having a wee outside. We have two cats that use to be indoor cats; we moved and have nothing but fields around us now. The cats learnt to do their business outside very quickly and can come and go through the cat flap when they want. Get a cat flap. Wee problems will be solved.

butteriesplease · 05/08/2022 10:40

could you let her roam the house at night? we do this with our cat. She is allowed out during the day, but the door is closed after her tea (usually by 8pm). Then she just cats about the place until morning. I am not sure that keeping a cat in a single room (that's how your op read) once they are beyond the tiny kitten stage is workable?

Mumsgirls · 06/08/2022 21:51

Mine would fight so has to stay in at night , also better for wildlife and less chance of a car accident. Night fights led dto injury as he won’t back down, not worth the risk to me and is perfectly happy.Have a flap that reads a chip ,but locked after evening biscuit feed

Mumsgirls · 06/08/2022 21:52

Also uses tray but only in wet weather

Calliana · 08/08/2022 09:59

Yes seconding the 2nd tray idea. Ours wees in one then goes through the house to the other one to poo. Definitely doesn't like to do both in the same tray

PeacheyPeach · 09/08/2022 21:41

Hi all little update for you 😊
We bought the catflap, our little miss loves it she's in and out all the time. Pretty much only stays in the garden bit I think she loves her new found freedom. Not used the litter tray since!!!

I have 2 cats I let them out during the day and lock them in at night with a litter tray downstairs which they use - if I go out during the day I bring them in - and let them out when I return
