Hi,I have 2 cats 2 years old, they often go out at night and come and go most of the day,I'm going away for 4 days soon and wondered if anyone had experience of putting their furrys into a cattery if never been away before.

II would be able to relax more knowing that they had someone looking out for them, but worried that they couldn't get out at night ,sorry for rambling 😂

I use a cat sitter rather than a cattery. They come in twice a day to feed the cats and check on the house

We use a cattery for our cat. Have left him for 2 nights up to now but will leaving him for a week soon. I feel better knowing that he's safe and I know where he is whilst I'm away. He's definitely a outdoor cat but copes ok at the cattery.

Hi my cat has recently stayed in a cattery, I really didn't want to but it was the only option, she is an outdoor cat, she was ok, not happy but safe and cared for. I think I have just been forgiven, it was lovely to see her reaction when she saw me 😻.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/08/2022 20:09

Mine are currently in the cattery. I know they have a great time there and I've not worried abut them at all.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/08/2022 20:10

@Battlecat98 I'm glad you get a good reaction! Mine are not pleased to see me. I don't have ducks, chickens and horses at home.

AnnaMagnani · 01/08/2022 20:12

Mine prefer cattery.

OK they don't they would rather be at home, but many cats don't cope with being at home if you aren't there. One of mine loses her marbles.

At cattery she sits in her pen under a blanket and eats herself crazy.

When she comes home she is clingy for an evening and then we are sorted.

Cat sitter took months to recover from as it was an upset in her home.

dementedpixie · 01/08/2022 20:13

I have used a cat sitter several times, the last of which was this year at the end of June. We were away for 2 weeks and she came in twice a day to feed/play with them

Phoenixrise · 01/08/2022 20:16

I’ve used a cattery for my outdoor cat and he loves it. He gets plenty of attention and has some outside space to explore

I always feel happier if he’s in the cattery, no chance of him going missing or getting injured

Some positive responses, thank you everyone 😘

Ive used catteries, pet sitter and someone who came in twice a day. The latter was the least successful as she seemed to have not noticed the stench of cat wee coming from my daughter's bedroom - cat was using her cardboard dressing up box. All the woman said was that for two cats the litter tray wasn't used much 🙄🙄🙄. Had to throw out all the clothes and shampoo the rug and wait about a month fur the smell to go.
Call me unsentimental but they are cats - they don't think the way you do. Do whatever's convenient and within budget.

AnnaMagnani · 01/08/2022 21:25

If someone came in to play with my cat twice a day, they wouldn't find the cat.

Cat would be hiding in a cupboard, refuse to come out and then probably do a wee in my bed to cheer itself up after they left.

If your cat is very confident and loves everybody then cat sitter may work. But as @easyday says, cats' brains don't work like human brains.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/08/2022 22:02

Ours was ok in the cattery. The one dn uses is nicer than my first flat.

Im not even joking it’s got huge chalets with human beds etc, flat screen tv and fireplaces.

Olinguito · 02/08/2022 11:16

It very much depends on your cat''s personality - mine hated all other animals and found the cattery very stressful. She was much happier at home with a friend coming in twice a day to feed her.

helpfulperson · 02/08/2022 12:17

I've used a mixture. Mine were very cautious of unknown people for a while after a challenging life pre coming to me which included not knowing where their next meal was coming from. But now they seem confident that whatever arrangements I make they will be fed and fussed.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 02/08/2022 12:42

It's very cat dependent, IMO.

One of mine is a confident, friendly little thing and I know she would be absolutely fine in a cattery. The older boy would tolerate it if he had his sister with him for company and reassurance (he's a rescue so a bit uncertain and scared in new situations). My youngest would 100% not cope being shut in a cattery. He has urinary issues and is very nervous and easily stressed/scared, so he would need to stay at home.

As we have three of them and they're all indoor cats, we just keep them at home and DH's sister pops in twice a day to feed them and give the youngest his medicine. He hides a lot but he's much happier in his own home with familiar smells etc. If she couldn't do it, I'd pay a cat sitter.

Depends on the cat. My friendly, sociable boy loves all the comings and goings of the cattery and “chatting” to the other cats! They can keep an eye on his health issues 24/7 and he is secure (indoor cat due to said health issues).

An outdoor cat who likes to roam might be very stressed by beint removed from his territory and more stressed by being surrounded by other cats!

What also contributes to the choice is that we have a recommended cattery that we love and I’m yet to find a sitter that I have a recommendation for!
