Moving house HELP

What would you do: moving house

Cattery is full when we might be moving.

Do I...
A) try to find somewhere else that dcat has never been?

B) see if a friend can have her for 2 days in one room, we can visit daily

C) let her roam whilst the removals are there on moving day, get a big crate for the new house, move her in first, put her in one room whilst we move in, she'll have everything in with her, would check in on her regularly.

I really don't know what is best! In my head she was safely in the cattery but as have been waiting so long for a completion date we've now crossed into peak holiday session & they are full 😔

I'd try a different cattery.

Antarcticant · 01/08/2022 12:04

I would go for B.

If not possible I would, on moving day clear one room first, shut her in while you move the rest of the stuff, then take her to the new house with you and shut her in a room first while you do the bulk of the moving in. If you let her roam while you pack up it's likely she will disappear at all the fuss and confusion and leave you hanging round until she comes back.

I would put her in a crate before the removal men arrive in case she is scared by the noise and hides. Keep her shut in one room - ideally one that has been emptied and shut the door. Let her out in the room if she needs to use the litter tray - cats can safely hang on for a couple of hours without harm.
Move her to your new house and shut her in a safe room (with litter tray etc). Pop her back in the crate while movers are in.
Keep her indoors for a couple of weeks to get used to the new house before Lett so her out.
Hope it goes smoothly!
The alternative of a friend keeping her also sounds sensible.

Vets will take cats if you pay

ChampagneCharlieIsMyName · 01/08/2022 12:13

Get her scooped up into her pet carrier early morning. Bribe her with breakfast if you must. Cover the carrier so she’s calmer.
Once the removal men arrive and the house is emptied she might panic and run off outside.

its far from ideal but it’s your best option if you can’t book her into the cattery.
best of luck, it’s not much fun but I hope you soon feel at home.

Thank you all for your feedback, it's such a stressful time, we've not moved with her before so I really wanted it to be as stress free for her as possible.

She never usually roams too far but I think you're all right re crating her before the removals get there. The cattery are kindly going to lend me a spare large crate they have so at least she'll have plenty of room hopefully. We've had works done in the past & she's been ok in one room so fingers crossed this works out well

The plan is to keep her in for 2 weeks at least, I've stocked up on felliway & dreamies to bride her!!

I would do A. Then you know she's safe and won't come to any harm.

Personally I would try and find a different cattery. It is such chaos at moving time and I think that is far more upsetting for a cat than being in a different cattery nice and safe and peaceful.

I was really glad our cats weren't around when we moved, I kept them away for 5 days so the house was far less all over the place by the time they returned and we had unpacked all their stuff and they settled down very quickly.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 01/08/2022 13:21

It is chaos when moving - what we have done in the past is, all cats in baskets with newspaper (incase of accidents). Shut them in a cool pre emptied room. (Because cats run when upset and people will open doors they are told not to.
Asap, take cats and their bits to new house and put them in one room with food and litter tray. Barricade that room and do not allow anyone in there. A bathroom is a good choice, if you have more than one.
Empty removals van/car etc as fast as possible.
As soon as everyone has gone and all exterior doors and windows are shut, let cats out of the room. Drink alcohol of choice.

I'm requesting our bedroom gets emptied first, then litter tray in the en-suite, and cat shut in bedroom/en-suite, and fingers crossed. Dreamies on hand to get her back if she wanders - but she never does.....

Crate at last minute, and staying in there til we are unloaded. Then released into kitchen with tray and food and a bed. Will released into roast of house a day or 2 later.

But then, the only way she eats at the cattery is when they hand feed her tuna......

Dancingfairydreams · 02/08/2022 16:21

Thanks again all for your recommendations, it's nice to this resource!

I'm on the waiting list for the original cattery just incase they get any cancellations. But if we can't get in, I like the idea of emptying one room first & popping her in there, she'll probably enjoy scowling at the removal men through the windows anyway....giving them the death stare she gives the bin men when they wake her up no doubt!

Thanks again 😊
