My darling elderly cat is so sick

She is 15 and a half, and so loving we went on holiday and had someone look after her. She said she was fine but we returned and she was super dehydrated and doesn't seem to be herself. She has not eaten since Saturday night, then had an upset tummy. I made her a bone broth yesterday and and she has had a little, plus some water and cat milk, but her eyes are glazed and sunken and she is so thin. The person who looked after her said she was fine while we were away, I'm not sure this is correct. My DH is taking her to the vet this morning, the kids are crying as they say she is like their big sister. Please hold my hand and keep her in your prayers.

Thinking of you. Flowers

Thank you for your good wishes. I think she should be renamed Lazerus. She went to the vet at lunchtime, according to DH she weighed less than 3kg which tells you how thin she had got. The vet gave her an injection, took bloods and a urine sample but even though she was seriously dehydrated the vet thinks she will pull through. She came home, had a drink of water and some bone broth, I'd made specially for her and some bits of chicken from in there, then had a bit more this evening. She looks much better and was as chatty as usual.

How is she doing today?

FoggySpecs · 27/07/2022 14:35

It's a miracle she is so much better, honestly it's like she is back from the dead today I made the children tuna sandwiches for lunch and she was back to her old tricks trying to steal lunch off the table. I think the bone broth really help with rehydration.

Poor little baby, I hope she keeps on getting better. Has she had a test for thyroid or renal failure very common in that age group.

RaraRachael · 27/07/2022 14:44

@FoggySpecs so glad to hear she's doing ok. My old rescue boy is almost 15 and has always been very healthy but I dread anything happening to him.

FoggySpecs · 27/07/2022 15:23

@Shehasadiamondinthesky she has a heart murmur and apparently one of her kidneys is slightly enlarged but we knew that already, she had lots of tests on Monday and we are awaiting results so fingers crossed.

@RaraRachael I think regular vet checks are super important now they are very senior cats. I hope your boy remains in fine fettle.

He's very fit apart from being sick quite frequently. After years of investigation, x-rays etc they've found out he has a flaccid oesophagus so we just give him very wet food and that seems to have helped.

FoggySpecs · 27/07/2022 15:42

@RaraRachael at least if you know what the issue is and can manage it.

And that scare was your punishment for daring to take a holiday op..
Glad dcat is feline better!!.

bravotango · 27/07/2022 15:59

The exact same happened with our old boy - the vet said it was our punishment for leaving him to go on holiday!! Glad she's on the mend OP.
