My cat has a corneal ulcer

The vet has been through several treatments - first time there was no sign of corneal damage so drops, second time they suggested hay fever and antihistamine , third visit they detected a corneal ulcer and he is now on various types of serum, drops and painkillers. We have another check up tomorrow . Vet says she doesn't know what has caused it - could be bacterial , has mentioned herpes. Should I be asking for a referral to a specialist eye hospital?

Ours had a scratched eye that developed into an ulcer.

Two weeks of specialist eye drops and painkillers and it eventually cleared, but he still gets a gunky eye three years later. You can ask for a referral if you feel it's not healing.

Thank you. I had a cat who lost an eye before so I'm especially worried about this - different reason though.

My cat is 18 and has had an ulcer that just won't heal for the past year or so, they just keep giving her drops that do nothing. I don't think she is in pain with it but the eye is very cloudy and they are now talking about just removing it. I don't really know what to do, i keep thinking surely there is something else.

My one eyed cat had his cloudy eye removed because of pressure behind the eye from a tumour. He lived another 3 years until he was 17 so I wouldn't worry about that. This eye isn't cloudy so I know it's not the same thing.

Bless him.

My boy is seven now and doesn't seem to be in pain. He's terrified of the vets (he peed on the vet last time we had to take him) so they've said if it's not bothering him to just keep it clean.

His vision seems fine and he's happy to let me wipe it every few days when it looks gunky.

I have lots of experience with this, if drops are not working the eye lid needs to be sewed shut, drops continued to be applied. This means the eye has a chance to heal. If you are South I can recommend a fabulous vet.

Did your cat adjust OK? I just feel so bad for her, she's already deaf 😢 hope you get sorted with your wee kitty

My previous cat had frequent corneal ulcers. I think it stemmed from dry eyes or him accidentally scratching himself or worrying at it. I tried all kinds of things.

What worked in the end and stopped the cycle was using eye gel a couple of times a week and quick treatment when it happened. I would keep the drops and a cone in the house. As soon as I saw the signs, I'd start treatment immediately and put the cone on.

The other thing was - he had an allergy to fish. I took that out of his diet and put him on a really high quality high protein, no filler diet. It stopped happening after a while.

We are actually. I was looking at the Vet Hospital in Kent but obviously will depend on what happens this week.

Our lovely cat had this done - healed perfectly and he went on to live a long a happy life.

That's reassuring. Thanks for responding everyone.

Hopefully he'll be fine! Eyes are a pain for healing unfortunately.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/07/2022 12:27

One of mine had this and in the end, was given oral antibiotics and it healed really quickly.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/07/2022 15:38

My totally dozy Persian managed to puncture her eyeball in a fight. 🤔🙀 it healed really quickly. Fortunately she was really good with the eye drops.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/07/2022 15:39

Cheddar has a scar on her eye from an ulcer. It doesn't bother her but apparently is unusual as it still has a blood supply.
