Cat rejecting wet food but eating dry / drinking water

My cat has stopped eating wet food as of about four days ago. She eats all her dry food and also has begun drinking so much water. She sits at her bowl for five minutes drinking. does this warrant a vet visit? She is okay otherwise.

Hmmm I would say vet
The drinking more might be as not getting the moisture that's in wet food

Drinking more when eating dry food is a good thing! It's only if they're eating dry food and NOT drinking water that you need to worry.

Dry food is also better for their teeth.

It could just be that your cat has decided that they don't like the wet food that you're giving them. They can be a bit like toddlers in this regard - one day they think it's yummy, the next day they look at you like you've given them poison!

It's also possible that the manufacturer has reformulated it and they don't like the new version.

It doesn't sound to me like this would warrant a trip to the vet - but obviously I'm not a vet, and if you are worried, then you could always give them a quick call.

Mine did exactly this a few months ago with no apparent reason.
The food manufacturer advised a few things - to try heating the food up in the microwave for 15 seconds to make it smell and taste better. To try a different feeding position. To spray or rub catnip in the room where the cat eats as it might boost their mood and make them more willing to eat. And to put a tasty topper on the wet food to encourage them.
Good luck, my cat is back to eating as normal. He never said what the problem had been.

Cats can be picky. I had a tom that happily ate both wet food in gravy, and food in jelly for years. One day he just refused to touch the gravy style and from that point on ignored it any time it was offered even when he was ravenous. Nothing wrong with him, he just changed his mind.

I've taken to blending their wet food until it is pate consistency with water. They lap it up.

Thanks everyone, I will first try a few tricks like heating up etc, and another variety, and will keep an eye on her and call vets if it continues. She has been fussy before but always at least ate a bit, and I was more concerned about the intake of water. But does make sense since she’s only eating dry.

Oh blending ? Will try too!
thanks all.

I also heat it ... :)

I have a new kitten and asked the vet when she could go on wet food… he said, no need, biscuits are best

PeloAddict · 22/07/2022 18:03

Should have added my vet said if they are sitting by/hanging over the water bowl that's when they want to see them as it can be a kidney or thyroid issue

kittyp13 · 22/07/2022 20:05

I tried heating it up. Plus treats on top. Plus a new kind of food, then tuna, just to see what would happen and she hasn’t eaten anything.

What's the problem with just giving her the dry food that she has been eating?

kittyp13 · 22/07/2022 20:44

it has been a sudden turnaround from happily (or sometimes nkt happily) eating the wet food. She only has one pouch a day split in two because she’s so small. The dry food is fine to eat, but she only eats a tablespoon a day , if that.
She is also becoming lethargic. I think I’m just going to take her to the vet to be safe.
