Cat proofing a gate?

I live in rented accommodation so limited in what I can do here. Also on a very tight budget. However, my Siamese is intent on escaping the garden! I’ve blocked all holes he could get through and the fence is mainly vertical so he can’t climb it (yet)! But he jumps over the gate. It’s only three feet high so not a problem for him.

I’ve tried keeping him indoors but he needs the stimulation. I play with him a lot but he’s easily bored of his toys and just wants to go out.

I’ve tried attaching plastic mesh but he jumps on it and presses it down then escapes.

I’m not very good at diy but can screw or hammer something to attach it, as long as it can be removed without damage when I move out at some point.

I’ve seen the spikes you can attach to the top of the fence but it seems they don’t deter all cats.

Any low budget suggestions that are easily fixed? I’ve been racking my brain but all I have left now is to put a water sprinkler in front of the gate!

Thanks.

Don’t use spikes! Cats will find a way and you may have to accept he’ll go beyond the garden unless you build a totally enclosed Catio.

Thanks. I don’t want him going outside the garden. There’s a busy road not far away and also as he’s pedigree he may be stolen.

I can’t afford a catio. The spikes I’ve seen are rubber, so wouldn’t hurt him, but the reviews seem to show that they don’t contain all cats.

The spikes won’t work.

I really think it’s a catio or leash situation.

He hates being on a leash, and usually manages to duck out of the harness.
