6 week old kitten help.

We found a kitten with a dying mum. Vet says about 5-6 weeks old. He is weaned. We saw him eat so vet has given us wet food and advised just wet food and water for now.
We started him on the food today in small amounts. He has done a slightly runny poo tonight. Not totally liquid but not solid.
Is this normal?
I'm worried about him getting dehydrated in the current heat.

Thanks

I promise photos tomorrow as a reward for help. He's asleep now.

It can be especially if on a new food. Keep an eye on him and also give him water from a syringe if you can to help him drink. Cats don't tend to drink a lot so getting some in will be good. Also start on worming him and check for fleas etc.......

We're adding some water to the food and he laps that up when he eats so at least I know he's had some water.
He's very little but feisty.

Stress does them to them, hold your nerve and feed him when he’s hungry. Kittens eat a lot. Poor little thing losing his mum so young.

He's so cute. He's like a perfect miniature cat. He's practicing his pouncing and hunting. He doesn't seem to want to be cuddled and petted that much.

They don’t at that age. Pouncing and biting is much more fun.

Id be very wary of syringe feeding them as they can breath in the water. Putting liquid in it's bowl as you've been doing is much better. Especially if it's happy to eat/drink it.

I got my kitten at 5 weeks in similar circumstances. Wet food and cat milk was advised by my vet. Use very flat dishes - i used saucers.

I also got a water fountain - which she did drink from, and still does.

shredded chicken is good for an upset stomach.

She will settle. Mine is a big four year old now and os off her food because of the heat

We weighed him. He is around 580g and seems to be doing well. Feeding him smallish amounts and often and he is enjoying his food. He drinks a little water too.
I've named him Scrappy.

Brilliant name😊. Glad he is doing well.

when my kitten was tiny she lived tunnels - still does! They aren’t expensive and are somewhere cool and dark for them to hide.

Ah he's lucky to have you, his poor mum though. What happened to her?

Pinkkahori · 17/07/2022 21:09

Thanks. His mother was a stray who turned up with him looking extremely thin and lethargic. We took her to the vet, she had sepsis and nothing could be done for her.

Aw bless poor bubba, thank goodness they found you and you're taking such good care of him.
Sounds like he's getting liquids well but you can always give him the water from poaching his fish or chicken breast as the flavour will encourage him and give him a bit extra.
Encouraging good gut health is also pretty important. Once he's older and more settled (at least 3 months plus old as changing foods again quickly can be unsettling) a good quality kitten food containing prebiotics and probiotics is a good idea. Something containing chicory (also listed as Inulin) and MOS (mannose-oligosaccharides) or FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides) is a good idea. This will feed desirable bacteria in the gut. Sorry for the jargon. I'm hesitant to recommend a food specifically here as I work for a pet shop and don't want to seem biased towards our own brands.
All the best
