Vet Fees

I took one of my cats to the vets today as her hair was patchy and a bit scabby. Vet thought an allergic reaction to flea bites though couldn’t find any on combing. Treatment was take home flea treatment for her and my other cat plus a house spray. This visit cost £180 which seems so expensive. I keep horses and if a horse vet came out to me for similar it would be less than £100 including call out.
So do I have unrealistic expectations or is this a normal fee nowadays?

Not too abnormal. One of my old cats used to have this. She didn't actually have to have fleas to get the reaction, just have one jump on her and bite her. Bald patches, anti inflammatory medications, antibiotics as well I think. It sorted her out and she was much more comfortable but oh those vets bills.

I suppose it depends how many other cats you have. Flea treatment isn't that cheap, and then add the cost of the consultation.

What's the breakdown?

MeridianGrey · 15/07/2022 15:10

Two cats total and no other medications like antibiotics.

That's very expensive.

Around here a vet appointment plus two doses of flea treatment would be about £50.

I suspect the flea treatment is bravecto or similarly - usually £35-40 each? Then a consult of £38-47? Then a house spray of £20-£30. Sounds about right?

Bravecto lasts 3 months, so like 6 doses over 2 cats
