Ideas for keeping pets cool in hot weather

It's forecast to possibly be 37c here on Monday.

I'm just going to leave the cats be. They've got a couple of drinking bowls, so I'll change that a bit more. Also, put small amounts of cat food down regularly as it dries out. They like cat milk, webbox yogurt treats and cat soups so I've got those in for extra liquid - obviously won't give them all in one day but good to have. I try and keep the house cool for myself, so can't do much more there.

Ollie isn't too bad, but Boris will do his nut if I try and keep him in. Luckily he sleeps under neighbours hedge all day.

Any other ideas for keeping them cool?

I put ice cubes in the cats’ water bowls; they are getting [to share] frozen treats (you can freeze Webbox yoghurt treats btw); and they have a cooling mat each - though today they’re still hanging out on my bed with me. In my south-facing room, which is unrelentingly hot. Oh & I’m keeping their wet food (they have dry food for breakfast & wet food for tea) in the fridge!

I don't know where mine are! The disappear in the morning and come back in the evening. I think they go into the fields to seek out shade.

I'm a bit worried how my long-haired and very fluffy cat will do in the coming days.

I've been doing a fair bit of extra brushing in preparation, to get as much loose undercoat out of her beforehand as I can. I also tested how she feels about being wiped down with a cold, damp towel (she was patient but gave me a very unimpressed, long-suffering look). There's cat milk in the fridge, and ice cubes (for her water and milk) and an ice pack in the freezer in case it looks like she's struggling. I've googled what danger signs to look out for. Mostly I hope she will find some relief on a tiled floor, and will do my best to keep the house as cool as I can.

I have tried to keep mine in as my house is fairly cool. But he has been gone most of the time hiding under things.

not sure what to do about the next few days

They are desert animals so I am not too concerned although my long haired cat likes to be watered with a watering can, so I will probably do that in the day. Indoors is quite cool so they will as usual have the freedom to go wherever they feel comfortable.

I bought a cooling mat and a fan. He's avoiding the fan as "terrifying" and trying to drape himself over me. Because I really need a furry hot water bottle
Mostly he's flopping about whinging about the heat but then going baking on the garden so I give up!

Ice cubes in water, freeze a you they play with and put damp towels down for them to lay on. X

One of mine insists on only drinking water from a glass. She will refuse if it is not cold from the fridge too. As she is normally a poor drinker I indulge her demands.😺

My large cat likes to sleep on a bed but I can’t keep those rooms cool, hopefully I can persuade her to stay downstairs with me. Small cat lives in the garden all summer, and is quite good at sleeping in bushes and shady spots, however tomorrow I think I will be forcing her indoors.

Quornflakegirl · 17/07/2022 22:41

I bought a cooling mat and paid extra for quick delivery. Mr Cat has not sat on it, not even once!
I am adding ice cubes to his water and putting more water bowls around the house. He also likes to play with ice cubes so I give him one to lick and swipe across the floor.

Ours have places indoors and outdoors where it's cooler and a cool mat that neither of them use. One of our cats loves the warmth and has been sleeping in the conservatory this week. The other hates it but has decided that a dining chair is the coolest place for her indoors.

All we can do is make sure they've got somewhere cooler and shady and plenty of water available and let them decide where they want to be.

Water in the bath if I put my feet in it he puts his paws in it they have lay on the cool mat ONCE IN TWO YEARS they are mostly keeping themselves to there cool spots in the house tomorrow I'm bringing mattresses downstairs to sleep on and they usually sleep with us so they will be cooler

My one cat is prone to cystitis so I syringed water into him today as he went listless and low he turned himself into a camel later on drinking the bath water 😂
