Male kitten (3.5mths) desperate to go outside- should I let him?

My male kitten is really keen to get outside now- he's sneaked out the back door twice now, and spends ages crying at the door once he's brought back in.

His second vaccination is due in September. I think he's just really bored in the house and wants to go out and explore.

Would I be totally doing the wrong thing to let him out?

I also have a female kitten the same age and she is showing no interest at all in going out which is a relief.

We have a nice walled back garden which should keep him happy- but I know he could easily find a way to escape that I'm not aware of.

Why isn't your male cat booked in for neutering?

Scrambledeggz · 13/07/2022 23:14

Why on earth aren’t you having the
boy neutered too?! How incredibly irresponsible

summercompanion · 14/07/2022 07:05

He is getting neutered I'm just saying the vet booked the female cat in first

No way would I let a kitten that young out.

I have two female kittens who are 7 months. They are Vaccinated, microchipped and neutered and I still haven't let them out yet. I also have a very large enclosed back garden.

I would be afraid they would get attacked by a bigger cat or escape and get knocked down. I'm waiting until they are at least 12 months to let them out. We have lots of toys and play with them a lot.

I volunteer at cats protection. Most of the strays, of all ages including very young cats, are unneutered. Male cats especially wander when they haven’t been done and get lost, likely after the scent of a female. They are more likely to be knocked down and killed too. Don’t let him out yet. They also add to the unwanted kitten population massively. Totally irresponsible.

i wouldn’t let any kitten out until they were fully vaccinated, neutered and probably around six months old, starting on a piece of string tied to the washing line and a cat harness.

No way. He's far far too young and I can't believe you were considering letting an un-neutered Tom out of the house 😳

I kept Haribo in until he was 9 months old because I didn't want him going out in the cold, wet and dark in the middle of winter. I didn't let him out until the spring. He doesn't go far and even though he has been trapped in sheds twice he was quite near home both times.

We had our boy / girl kittens neutered on the same day , so they both felt a bit crap at the same time rather than one wanting to bounce about .

Er have the rules changed? Where is the kitty tax?

Bullshit. You took an 8 week old kitten away from
it’s mother and let it straight outside? Sure you did.

Yes, 8 weeks is quite normal age for kittens to leave their mother. And weather was nice, he wanted to go out, so i opened the garden door. So what. Nothing happened and kittens have been born and raised outside forever. 🙄
