My cat is driving me crazy

Rehomed a year ago as indoor cat, but started to let her out in the evenings, as soon as I'm home patio doors are open - so she's free to roam

But she won't stop meowing at me (even when doors are open)

She is shy - she knows me (but runs and hides whenever I move about) She has food. Her tray is clean. She doesn't play (she'll chase dreamie occasionally) She doesn't want a fuss (does that stupid cat thing and runs away)
There is a feliway plugged in (which is new)

And her meow is not even a nice sound!

What is wrong with her?

We're losing our way and regrettably I'm not feeling the love right now 🙈 please help us

Presumably she's had a health check and is healthy?

Is she neutered? How old is she and is she a specific breed?

Is she allowed out during the day?

Allergictoironing · 09/07/2022 07:54

As suggested, above, a health check may be a good idea.

But other than that, every cat has it's own personality and experiences, and it's up to us as their keepers to do our best to help them. You don't say how old she is, why she's an indoor cat, or why she needed rehoming - these could all be clues to her behaviors.

From the sound of it, there's a good chance she would like to be more friendly but is scared or anxious, again this could be due to her past. It took me 6 months to be able to touch one of mine when they came home (indoor only then and now), a year for the other. 2 years before either made any sound at all (1st year of life feral). I needed the patience of a saint and lots of dreamies to get where we are today, always letting them come to me etc, but the amount they both demand fusses now can be a pain! Still don't tolerate anybody else though!

Cameronnorrieisabitofalright · 09/07/2022 08:08

Maybe she needs a dcat friend?

OldSpeclkledHen · 09/07/2022 08:31

She's 4 now (3 when I got her) just a DSH mog

She was put up for re homing as she didn't get along with her sister, or the young family she lived with

She's a shy cat, but it's just her and me, so she has the life she needs

Got her last August, so no chance was I going to let her out then! It's only been this year when the patio is open that she's started to venture outside, she likes to sit just outside and watch the wildlife

I've had to take her to the vets once (uti) - that was very very stressful trying to catch a cat that doesn't like being caught (Fortunately vet gave me some kind ideas for future)

I guess I just need more patience, honestly thought after a year she'd be more comfortable 🙄 tired of dealing with rejection though 🙈

She does like fusses, when I'm in bed she's all over it! Just she gets spooked so easily on the ground... and the meowing is a new thing

Took two years before my beautiful kitty came near me. She wanted to but she had trouble believing that I wasn’t going to hurt her so she was very scared, a lot like yours. It isn’t rejection of you, it is fear of humans because her trust was broken in the past and as a matter of survival she cannot forget that until she’s sure you won’t hurt her or shout at her. Gentle voice, kind attitude and tons of patience. Don’t be cross with her. She’s doing her best.

007DoubleOSeven · 10/07/2022 23:54

Does she want you to sit with her on the patio?

I've never known a cat who doesn't love company in the garden. She might not want fuss, but she might want the reassurance of you sat close by, especially if she's nervy.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 10/07/2022 23:55

She is cat= she is annoying.
I have three 10yr old, all annoying.

Isaidnoalready · 10/07/2022 23:58

All of my cats are suddenly more vocal they are fine they just want to talk I've one that yells downstairs like he is shouting hello if you hello back he "finds" you boops you and runs away

Are you sure she isn't anxious about outside? Is it too much for her?

007DoubleOSeven · 11/07/2022 00:17

@Isaidnoalready that's adorable

Maggiethecat · 11/07/2022 07:47

Sounds a bit like our rehomed cat. Very nervous thing, doesn’t like to be cuddled, is very vocal.

But we feel that she is settled after almost 3 years. She comes to the door when we return home and she’ll usually seek me out to sit near me although never on my lap.
Likes to go in the garden to listen to birdsong.

Have you a laser toy? Ours likes chasing that.

Be patient - it should get better.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 11/07/2022 07:49

One of mine is very vocal - we think he has some oriental in him due to the shape of his head - he's silent until he wants a fuss or for you to open a door for him 🙄 then he shouts at you constantly until you get up 🙈

He also responds to his name by shouting at you, lol.

I think it's just his way of communicating - she maybe wants you to come outside with her, to feed her, to open something for her?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/07/2022 07:51

She might just be telling you she's hot, or she wants to play? Do you have feather toys on a pole?

Loobyloo68 · 12/07/2022 15:26

My cat is very vocal, it's just a cat thing, she will come for a fuss but has never sat on my lap, and hates being picked up it's just how she is.

anderosonnmj · 12/07/2022 15:34

If she is scared of going outside, she might be asking you to go out with her. Try it next time and see if it works.

If the backdoor is closed, one of my cats will run to the door and meow loudly. I'll think that she wants to be let out, so I get up from my desk and go to the door. Then she'll quickly run to her empty food bowl! Sometimes she'll meow at me if she's been chasing insects and the insect flies away, as if she wants me to get the insect back for her. Then she does a complaining meow if anyone sneezes too loudly. Cats are strange.
