Anyone got/had a diabetic cat?

Norman has just turned 2 years old and is a sphynx cat. In case his history is relevant, we adopted him when he was about 15 weeks old from someone who claimed he couldn’t keep him anymore because he was moving away. After he’d been with us a few hours we realised he was very poorly so took him to the vets. He was severely anaemic and malnutritioned. He nearly didn’t make it but after a long stint in an incubator he pulled through and has been fine ever since until a few days ago.

A few nights ago he had a weird episode where he collapsed off the back of the settee almost as if he’d fainted. Then he was stumbling around and falling onto his side like he was drunk. This lasted around 30 seconds then he was back to normal and ate some food. We took him to the vets and we are awaiting test results but they suspect he could be diabetic and had a hypoglycaemic episode.

After researching online he does have many of the symptoms and I feel stupid for not noticing before now. He is constantly hungry which we always put down to greediness which is common with his breed - he eats 3 pouches and 2 portions of dry food a day but still acts like he is constantly starving hungry and always attempts to steal our food. He also drinks and wees a lot. Despite this he has always been active and happy. The vet said that diabetes can sometimes appear in cats that were poorly as a young kitten which fits with his history.

They haven’t said what it might mean for him future wise if it is diabetes as we need to wait for the results first. If that’s what it is, what can we expect? Injections? Special diet? Our priority is keeping Norman healthy but we are quite worried about the potential cost of this especially with another baby on the way. He is insured but I don’t know what it’ll cover.

Has anyone had a cat with diabetes and what happened?

Yes my cat was diabetic.

When he was 14 he was really ill. He didn’t eat or drink for a week and lost a lot of weight. He was tested but wasn’t diabetic. Turns out he had triaditis (inflammation of three organs - liver, kidneys, can’t remember the other one). He also had a scan and vet said there was something suspicious (tumour?)

He got better, but started losing weight again. This time it was diabetes. I had to learn to inject him twice a day with insulin, and he was put on a special carbohydrate free diet. There’s a place by their shoulder blades, where it seems to be fairly pain free. I can’t remember how I got him used to the injection without him always running away from me. I used to do it when he was eating. It was difficult to find food he wanted to eat, as he wasn’t keen on the special diet food.

I had to take him back to the vets to check his bloods until we were happy that his insulin levels were stabilised.

He stated putting on weight, and the vet said I was over feeding him, but I was sure I wasn’t. Then he had a seizure, and he had to be put to sleep. The vet then reckoned that it was due to the suspected tumour. He was around 16 when he died, and diabetic for about a year.

So, like your cat, it might have been an earlier illness that led to the diabetes.

I can’t remember all the costs, but my cat wasn’t insured.

I used to get a prescription from my vet (£17), which would last 6months?, and buy the insulin online. Much cheaper than buying at the vets. Ditto the special diet. Because he didn’t like it much, I used to check the wet food pouches for carbs, and substitute them now and then.

He led a normal life as a diabetic cat, but it did cost and was a bit of a worry. A neighbour learned to give the injection and would stay and pet sit so we could still go away.

Hope that helps and isn’t too long winded an answer.

Yes, some years ago I had a cat who became diabetic. Vet prescribed insulin injections and special diabetic dry food from vet. However, I did some research and found the Feline Diabetes group online - I think they're on the Web and FB. Fantastic expert advice.
Basically dry food is all carbs and terrible for diabetic cats. I took their advice and took my cat off all dry food. He only ate low carb, high protein wet food - Butchers was a good one. His blood sugars returned to normal and he no longer needed insulin. I had done daily ear-pricks with a glucometer so I knew when his blood sugar was low enough that he did not need insulin. Luckily he was a very placid cat who allowed the ear pricks.

I explained to my vet what I had done. They did a glucose curve and agreed that my cat did not need insulin. It only took a few weeks to get his sugar stabilised. He lived for another few years on wet food only quite happily until he died of cancer aged 15.

My current cats eat mainly wet food for this reason. Also they only have wet food in jelly, because the ones with gravy have unnecessary added sugars to make the gravy taste sweet.

Look up Feline diabetes advice groups online, they're really good. My vet was amazed (and failed to sell me any Special Dry Diabetic Food!!)

Good luck with your cat.
