Microchip cat flap and unwanted guests

We have a microchip cat flap where we have replaced the batteries a few times. Recently we have had a neighbourhood cat come in through the cat flap at night and eaten our two cats' food. We know this as we have caught it in action twice. When we change the cat flap batteries, does it reset itself meaning you need to redo the microchip recognition? I just can't understand how the cat is able to come in...

Does it open if you just push it?

Have you got it set up right? Mine will only let my cat in or out. No other cats can come in. I don’t have to reset it after changing the batteries. I’ve got a Sureflap one.

Same as Daisy. Not sure how your intruder is getting in if it's working properly.

It shouldn't be able to get in if your flap is set correctly unless it's literally tailing your cats.

Are your cats female? I have found unwanted visitor enthusiasm has significantly declined now I have only boys (all my cats are neutered)

That's not right. It should retain your settings despite battery changes.

It's definitely either not set up properly or it's not working properly. They're kitty proof used correctly.

Sometimes my cats come through the catflap very slowly because they are weird and it doesn't always swing close properly after them because of it. Could it be that?

I have heard of smart cats being able to get their paws under the flap and pull it open. It has happened to me. Though thankfully our intruder cat seems to have moved away now.

Sometimes they do need resetting, best to change batteries, whilst flashing red , I have a sureflap, my 4 th one, sometimes they do fail too

Some cats can use their claws and pull the door outwards and get in that way. My microchip catflap doesn't require a chip to go out ie, the way the intruder is getting in.

Its quite smart of the littke bugger really!

And my default reset is to lock to all entries, not open to all
