Am I being over dramatic taking my cat to the vets

Hi All, to start with, I love my cat and would do anything for her. I will be taking her to the vets today but im worried im being dramatic. I hate taking her to the vet as the car stresses her out but today she's just not been right.

I cant put my finger on it but she didn't meet me at the door this morning, not eaten anything, been very slow and is avoiding me. She has abit of yellow gunk in both her eyes but it's cleared up.

I'm taking her to the vet at 4.45 today. She has eaten a little bit now but nothing like normal.

I know it's hot but this doesn't feel the same as when she's trying to keep cool. Something happened last night and she weed and pooped outside out backdoor which normally means next doors cat has chased her.

I'm not too sure what I'm worried about at the moment and I don't want the vet to think I'm wasting their time but something feels off (not serious but enough for me to be concerned)

Would you still take her?

Thanks

Difficult as all the vet is likely to do is feel tummy, check temp, look in ears, eyes & mouth and listen to heart so unless you want to shell out for blood tests I’m not sure they will know what’s up. I absolutely adore my cat but I’d probably see how she was in another day but I totally understand you taking her.
GP’s do the old ‘watch and wait’ approach with human patients & they are able to explain how they feel! It must be so hard for vets unless there is something glaringly obvious.

I hope the vet could offer some suggestions & she is back to feeling herself soon.

What???. Are you made of money

I dont take mine unless they have been ill for at least 48 hours

She may have eaten a bird or just is too hot.

Lindy2 · 16/06/2022 17:09

If you can easily afford a vet appointment then yes it would be sensible to take her.

If a cat's not eating they can go downhill rapidly. Is she drinking at all?

Clearly something is off. It might just be that the other cat stressed her but it might be something else.

A check over and temperature check etc sounds sensible. If something has happened like she's been bitten by the other cat the vet might find the wound.

I hope all is ok.

I took mine last week because she's not herself, was hiding a bit and being less sociable. Also she didn't have 'happy ears (when they are pointed forward and alert, they are slightly back, ten to two) I demonstrated with my hands above my own head to the vet and he didn't laugh or think I was bonkers. Just had bloods and a second set for glucose so £400 in already for 3 appointments!
You know her best of you can afford it and want her checked don't feel silly.

LadyLolaRuben · 16/06/2022 17:16

You know your cat. Yes I'd take her for a check over if she's not herself

SiobhanSharpe · 16/06/2022 17:19

My cat was like this once, the vet diagnosed a uti and antibiotics, she was fine again after a few days.
I can't remember what it cost but it was worth it IMO.

Mellowyellow222 · 16/06/2022 17:35

every time I have had a gut feeling that something was wrong with my cat I was right.

you know her better than anyone else - I can tell if my cat has an infection just by how much time she spends outside.

go to the vet and don’t listen to anyone who says leave it.

SunshineRoo27 · 16/06/2022 18:08

Thanks for all your input, she actually was due an appointment anyway for her annual check so when I called with my concerns this morning the vets were happy for me to merge the appointment as such.

We have decided to put the booster off however as she is definitely under the weather and as previously stated blood work would be very expensive so we are starting with a probiotic, hopefully she will feel better soon.

She has in the past suffered with crystals so my first thought is always that she is having a flare up which could turn nasty (and expensive) quite quickly so I am sometimes premature in calling the vets for advice although fortunately I haven't had to do this for a few years so I was very concerned this morning when she was very obviously not herself.

She'll be getting alot of love and cuddles (if she let's me) tonight and hopefully she'll be back to her normal self in a few days

I wonder if she’s been bitten by next door’s cat? My boy goes like that when he’s brewing an abscess. He’s a right scrapper so it happens three or four times a year. An anti-biotic injection and he’s back to his old self in a day or two

HeyDelRey · 16/06/2022 18:17

Cat bite was my first though as well. They get really under the weather with it. Also, if you don't already have one then I'd seriously consider getting a litter tray considering next door's cat is bullying her. Cats will put off weeing if they don't feel safe, which might make a UTI worse.

SunshineRoo27 · 16/06/2022 18:31

Not sure how to tag people but yes a bite was something I thought too. The vet couldn't see anything and was reluctant to give antibiotics for the sake of it, which I agreed with. I will keep an eye on her though.

We have an indoor litter tray, I've tried to keep her in but she loves going out. She mostly stays in the garden with us. It's only in the evenings that he will corner her. So we try and lock her in after 5pm so it's not often that this happens but it's quite an ordeal for her when it does.
