Boring cat flap question!

Hello. We are changing our drafty backdoor to a composite door and I want a cat flap in it. Joiner said he would put one in but advises against it because it will be shame for the new draft proof door to be compromised by a drafty cat flap. To be fair, my cat hardly every uses her cat flap, preferring to meow next to it or ring the keys until I open the door for her 🙄. Can anyone recommend a draft proof cat flap? Does one even exist? Thanks!

Years ago we had one that had a flap both side of the door and an extendable bit in the middle to accommodate the thickness of the door. It wasn’t drafty. Is he thinking of the single door versions?

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 16/06/2022 15:15

Oh and it’s was lockable, so could be in only, our only, in and out or totally locked.
the only problem was the dog likes to shove her head through to check if it was raining before she went out, and after awhile regularly ended up wearing it like a collar. Cats weren’t impressed, preference being to bang the flap until I opened the door, or better still, the window for them. 🤷‍♀️

Is there a wall you could fit a sureflap one in?

Interesting. Our one now is single door. But the whole door is so drafty that I don't think it makes a difference. I'll go and check. Thanks!

Or if you go ahead something like this?

Thanks! I've written off to the composite door company to see if they will manufacture it for a cat flap. I might also put it through an external wall (though the only one it could go on leads to the garage so then another cat flap in the garage).

I’ve never found a draft proof one. It sounds like she doesn’t really need one anyway if she’s got you trained to come to jangling keys.

uhtredbebbanburg · 16/06/2022 19:28

Yes, I'm totally trained and an option is not to have one at all. But it's nice for her to have the option. Good lord, listen to me. I'm turning into a crazy cat lady 😹

Maybe a door bell at cat level (joking not joking!)

Probably no help but we’ve recently moved house , we needed a flap in our back door which turned out to actually be a front door with mouldings so no use for a flap . After much debate we replaced the door panel with privacy glass (matching our actual front door ) and had a round / clear 4 way flap installed , it’s not draughty and the door looks better than before , costs much less than a door , no new keys and once organised very quick to fit , no mess whatsoever.
