Best cat food (wet and dry) for low income

I’ve recently brought my kitten home, and he’s three months old. He was fed Whiskers wet food before he came to me, but I’d like him to eat better quality food. I am low income, so I’d like his food to be affordable to me.

Is there anyone on here that is knowledgeable about cats that can give me recommendations please?

I feed him Whiskers poultry pure delight wet food
and Purina Pro Plan Live Clear dried food, at the moment.

Thank you in advance!

I believe the best cheap wet one is butchers classic cat food Smile it's worth having a google as prices vary a lot too between Amazon/supermarkets/online places

For dry food wainwright's and wellness core are the two decent grain free high meat content I can think of, the others are more £££

It's worth thinking about where you will be buying it too, if pets at home then get a card as they send vouchers through too. Or subscribe and save on Amazon and stalk for the cheapest prices, use Quidco too

Agree that Butchers Classic is great and can be fed to kittens (it says for cats of all ages although there is a version which is 1+ so just check).

I buy mine from The Range where you can get twenty-four 400g cans for £16 which should keep them going.

Actually, The Range has a huge supply of both wet and dry. Mine are only on wet now but Harringtons dry is good value from there and is low in cereals (and is hypoallergenic too!)

SanFranBear · 11/06/2022 22:34

Wait... it was James Wellbeloved dry I used to buy which The Range stock and its good value. Although both Harringtons and Wainwright's are good - just not sure if you'd find it there!

To be honest, though, would definitely be able to advise better with a photo 😉

Avoid Purina as a precaution, there’s some dodgy stuff going on with that brand

sainsburys own wet is a hit with ours right now

hiraethh · 11/06/2022 22:40

Thank you! As a precaution, I won’t be buying Purina anymore!

Just been looking at the Classics food, as suggested. However, I can’t find the kitten version anywhere, I don’t want to give him adult food yet as he’s only three months old…

The standard Classic is for all ages.. I didn't start my kittens on it until they were both neutered, so about 5 months, but they've thrived on it and the vet was really pleased with their progress at a recent check up (it's their first birthday end of this month).

This is the website which underlines that: www.classiccatfood.co.uk/

Totally understand if you want to hold off whilst he's so little - he is absolutely gorgeous and definitely deserves the very best - but he should be fine on it and your pocket will definitely thank you!

Yes, I agree with Butchers Classic. And kittens can eat the normal one - kittens versions of things are really mainly marketing.

Really cheap wet food isn't too problematic. It's cheap dry food, particularly for males, which causes problems. Basically all cheap dry food (such as Whiskas, Go Cat and anything else of a similar price range) is linked to urinary crystals and blocked bladders in male cats.

So I would feed Butchers Classic and sparing amounts of a quality dry, such as James Wellbeloved.
