Getting a cat before a holiday

Hi there, would be grateful for any advice from experienced cat owners here. We are looking to adopt an adult cat from a rescue place soon. However, we are booked to go on a holiday abroad for 7 days in late August. Would it be best for us to wait until we are back from the holiday or would a two month gap between getting a cat and going on holiday be a big enough gap? Obviously the cat would be well cared for during our absence with regular visits/cat sitters etc, but I guess I am just worried that it might get anxious at us suddenly not being there for a few days when it's only just settled in? Sorry if this is a silly question, and thanks in advance!

Wait until after

Get it now! Kitty will be so much happier in your home for the next two months rather than being in a rescue centre! And like you said will be well looked after whilst you are away!

You've waited this long. It will be worth it. Poor thing will be confused and want to get to know you're there for it.

Wait. I went on holiday a few months after getting my cat. I booked her into a cattery - she had an allergic reaction while there and was very ill.

I still feel the guilt three years later and it took her ages to settle back into her routine. I felt we had to start from scratch.

I went away for the weekend about 3 weeks after adopting Cheddar. She went to the cattery with her new sister and was fine! Better in your home than In a rescue. Two months is loads of time.

Have you reserved a cat already? Or are you asking if it's best to wait to do this on your return from your hols?

MyMumTracyBeaker · 06/06/2022 22:21

We were due to go on holiday a month after meeting our cat in the rescue. Rescue wouldn't let us reserve him, so we cancelled our holiday and adopted him instead!

How would you feel if you'd been abandoned? Taken to a shelter. Taken away from the shelter then abandoned again by your owners just as you were getting used to your new owners.

Are you talking about a specific cat who will either come home with you now or have to wait another two months in a cattery? In that case, I would adopt now.
But if it's just a random cat and the choice is whether you adopt one before or after your holiday, I would wait until September.

You DO know cats don't feel human emotions don't you?!?! So long as cat is looked after whilst OP is away then they will be fine!!!!

They feel cat emotions though

It would be less stressful all round if you wait until after the holiday, many adult cats would be fine with you going away after a couple of months - all my previous cats would have been, but my latest would not at all.

Two months is fine! Get the cat! :)

Thank you so much everyone for all your thoughts. We have started a process with a particular cat but nothing is confirmed and I know there were a few others also interested in him so it will be rehomed soon I am sure. I think I need to rein in my impatience & wait until after the holiday for our much wanted cat!
Thank you all again, it has been so useful.
